How to check Windows Updates are current and properly installed

How to check Microsoft Windows Updates are up-to-date and properly installed on a PC, Computer or Laptop.

To ensure your computer works properly, securely and is compatible with other software, Microsoft periodically issues “patches” or “updates” which in most cases are automatically installed without you even knowing it.

How do you check this is happening and you are fully updated?

The procedure for doing this, varies depending on the “version” of Windows your device is using, check the following guide to determine which type you have.

What Windows Operating System Do I have?

Windows updates for ALL of the following is generally done from the “Control Panel” finding the control-panel differs depending on the Windows Version.

Update Checking for Windows 10

Search for “Windows Updates”

 

Or through “Control Panel”

Or by clicking on the “Systems Settings” button

From here select “Update & Security”

 

From here “System and Security”

click “Check for updates”

Update Checking for Windows 8

In Windows 8, use the “Search” facility to find “Windows Updates” or “Control Panel”

Update checking for Windows 7

Windows updates can be accessed by using “Search” or “Control Panel”

Control Panel -> System and Security -> Windows Updates

 

 

Update checking for Windows Vista

Basically similar to the Windows 7 method, found via search or Control Panel

 

Update Checking for Windows XP

Basically similar to the Windows 7 method, found via search or Control Panel

 

How to check that Windows updates are installing correctly

Look for “Installed Updates” or “Update History” or “View Update History” and ensure that all recent “Important or Recommended Updates” are NOT failing. (Optional updates are not important)

If your Important Updates continue to “Fail” your computer is still vulnerable and remedial action is required.

Consult the IT Guys or search Google to find a solution or “Fix” from Microsoft.
