How to remove the “Snap-Do” search virus

The IT Guys have recently come across and fixed a few PCs infected with the SnapDo browser hijacker. If the default page on your browser looks like the above picture, you have it. SnapDo Search will display advertisements and sponsored links in your search results, and may collect search terms from your search queries. It also runs a program called SnapDo.exe in the background which will also cause your computer to run slower, perhaps even become unresponsive. SnapDo is promoted via other free downloads, and once installed it will add SnapDo Toolbar, and change your browser homepage default search engine to search.snapdo.com. SnapDo Toolbar got on your computer after you installed a freeware software (video recording/streaming, download-managers or PDF creators) that had bundled into their installation this browser hijacker and when you did so, you will have agreed to change your default browser homepage and default search engine to search.snapdo.com and install the SnapDo Toolbar. Be very careful when installing software because often, a software installer includes optional installs, such as this SnapDo Toolbar. Don’t accept the defaults blindly and opt for the custom installation and deselect anything that is not familiar, especially optional software that you don’t need. Even after changing your default search engine back to Google.com or something else, it will still revert back to SnapDo unless you carry out the following instructions. Step 1 – Uninstall Snapdo.exe Goto the Windows Control Panel and look for the “Uninstall Software” option (found under Control PanelProgramsPrograms and Features in Windows 7). Look for “Snap.Do” by “ReSoft Ltd” and follow the uninstall procedure. While here, also look around for any installed programs not familiar to you and uninstall them also. You may have picked up a number of similar programs recently. Step 2 – Remove Snapdo as your default search engine in your browsers Depending on which browser you use this will differ follow these instructions Step 3 – Remove the SnapDo Toolbar from your browsers Depending on which browser you use this will differ follow these instructions: How to Remove the SnapDo Toolbar from Internet Explorer How to Remove the SnapDo Toolbar from FireFox How to Remove the SnapDo Toolbar from Chrome Step 4 – Remove the SnapDo Toolbar from your browsers Do a full virus scan of your computer using a boot disk. Follow these instructions to do so using AVG Rescue for Free. Step 5 – Cleanup Registry Finally cleanup your registry using any of the Free or paid programs available, click here for details, follow step 7 If you live in Western Australia, please bring your computer, PC or laptop to our office and we will be happy to remove the virus for a small fee. How to remove 99% of computer viruses, malware and adware for FREE

The only effective way of removing computer viruses, malware and adware from your PC, Computer or Laptop is to use a clean “boot-disk” that examines each file on your machine without starting your operating system (such as Windows XP, Vista, 7 or 8). The boot-disk needs to be downloaded and then installed on a CD, DVD or USB memory stick or flash-drive and you need to create these from a reliable and secure source. The IT Guys like many other computer professionals rely on the “AVG Rescue CD” which can be downloaded and installed on a CD/DVD or USB stick for free. Full instructions on how to do this can be found on the AVG site here . or see the videos below: How to create a bootable AVG Rescue CD/USB | AVG Tutorial AVG Tutorial | How to remove infection from PCs using AVG Rescue How to remove the remaining 1% of computer viruses, malware and adware for FREE Some viruses and trojans resist even the attentions of the boot disk… and in this case the only way of removing them is to delete them using the utilities available in the AVG Rescue disk. 1) Manually Remove Malware not automatically healed You will need to know which files require deletion. Sometimes the virus scan report will show the exact path to the virus but most often it is best to delete the whole folder (taking care to ensure it is not a system folder used by the operating system) The following example has been witnessed in more than one PC we have fixed recently. In the above example a whole folder with the path “/Program Files (x86)/TOSHIBA Games/” contained many “Win32/Heur.dropper” threats (Win/Heur is a malicious software that once it is executed has the capability of replicating itself and infect other files and program. It can also corrupt or delete data, erase your hard drive, steal personal information, hijack your screen and spam your contacts) In the utilities section of the AVG Rescue disk is a file manager utility called “Midnight Commander” use this to identify the folder that required removing and delete the necessary file or folder. 2) Install all Windows updates This may seem obvious but without knowing it, viruses on your computer may have been blocking windows updates for many weeks, days or months. Manually run an update by going into the control panel or the windows action center and manually running a windows update. This may mean restarting your computer several times. The dialogue differs between each windows version (Windows 7 example below) You will also need to examine the windows update history. If any updates have “failed” they will need to be manually installed possibly by downloading a special “fix” 3) Remove all unnecessary installed programs In windows control-panel search on “uninstall” and then review all the programs listed as installed. Especially the newer ones. If you find any that are not signed by Microsoft or your Computers Manufacturer and you suspect them as possibly being malicious, then “uninstall them” 4) Clean up your browser add-ons and toolbars Internet browsers are a main source of viruses and malware Cleanup your add-ons, extension and remove all unnecessary search engines, toolbars and applications. You will speed up your internet browsing and stop those annoying popups, spyware and shopping alerts. 5) Clean up your start-up programs Loading 3,4 or 10 programs automatically at windows start-up can take many minutes and seem like your computer is broken or has a virus. It could just need some tidying up. At the command prompt or “Run” open up the command window and type “MSCONFIG” Here you can remove any unnecessary startup programs. 6) Clean up your browser short-cuts Some viruses corrupt your browser short cuts. If you cannot get rid of change the way your browser starts up, it maybe due to a corrupt browser short cut. Remove all shortcuts and re-create from the original program file. 7) Clean up your computers registry Use a free registry cleaner such as “CCleaner” to cleanup your registry entries. Can I purchase the AVG Rescue CD instead of having to create it myself? Yes, please click on the link here. Is an anti-virus program essential?

A current and updated anti-virus program on you computer, PC or laptop is essential to ensure that you are protected from most malware, computer viruses, spyware and adware (Click here for an explanation) However, anti-virus programs are not 100% fool-proof and you can still accidentally pick-up viruses from opening e-mails (especially email attachments), visiting websites, installing new or updating existing programs, browser add-ons or applications.       Computers, PCs and Laptops using the most popular operating systems “OS” such as Microsoft’s XP, Vista, Windows 7 or Windows 8 are the most vulnerable to picking up viruses.               Computers, PCs and Laptops using Apple Macintosh (OSX) or Linux operating systems are less likely to be infected by viruses and as such do not generally require anti-virus software. However, they can still pick up adware and spyware through browsers such as Chrome and Firefox.       If your anti-virus program has expired or is out-of-date YOU WILL PICKUP viruses, malware and adware no matter how careful you are,       … so ensure you update your virus definition database regularly by renewing your paid subscription or installing a reputable anti-virus program such as the paid AVG Internet Security or the equally as good AVG Free edition Click here to find out the difference between FREE and PAID anti-virus programs? Your Anti-Virus program may “warn” you that your computer has been infected but cannot always remove them, even though you will probably see a message informing you that the virus has been “deleted“, “removed“, “healed” or “quarantined“. Whenever you see such a message it is advisable to reboot your machine, update your virus definitions and run a “full-scan” of every file on your machine. This will take many minutes or many hours depending on how much data you have on you machine. There are some viruses called “worms” or “trojans” that are very clever and cannot be removed in this way. The only way to remove such programs is to use a clean “boot-disk” that examines each file on your machine without starting windows. How to remove 99% of computer viruses, malware and adware for FREE Click here for detailed instructions on how to remove 99% of malware and computer viruses for FREE using the AVG Rescue CD/DVD or bootable USB What is the difference between a “Computer Virus”, “Malware”, “Adware” and “Spyware”? “Malware” (short for malicious software) is software used to disrupt computer operation, gather sensitive information, or gain access to private computer systems. Malware includes computer viruses, ransomware, worms, trojan horses, rootkits, keyloggers, dialers, spyware, adware, malicious BHOs, rogue security software and other malicious programs; the majority of active malware threats are usually worms or trojans rather than viruses. (See Wikipedia definition here) The difference between the FREE and PAID versions of the same anti-virus program? The “paid” version of an anti-virus product usually offer two main additions to their “FREE” version. Paid versions are usually easier to use for non-technical users Paid versions offer technical support, online or by telephone. This is not available in the FREE versions. What can I do if I do not have the confidence or the technical expertise to remove the malware/virus myself? If you live in Western Australia, please bring your computer, PC or laptop to our office and we will be happy to remove the virus for a small fee. You can contact us here. Otherwise contact your nearest virus removal specialist. The IT Guys recommend AVG anti-virus products. Click on the banner below to purchase. Written by John Kirkby

How to use Microsoft’s default program to backup to an external device or hard drive

Using Microsoft Windows to Backup to an External Hard Drive Why reinvent the wheel or waste money on 3rd party backup software when Microsofts default backup program works well to an external hard drive. You can even backup the files stored on Google Drive, protecting your data twice, to be sure, to be sure. Windows 10 Backup Select the Start  button, select Settings  > Update & security  > Backup  > Add a drive, and then choose an external drive or network location for your backups. All set. Every hour, we’ll back up everything in your user folder (C:\Users\username). To change which files get backed up or how often backups happen, go to More options. Windows 7 and earlier Backup Goto start-> Control Panel and select “Backup Your Computer” under “System and Security”     Just by plugging in your backup device you may get prompted to “use this drive for backup” but if you do not, use the backup options from control panel as detailed above Select the backup drive you want to backup TO (usually E: F: or higher) ….NOT C: Allow Microsoft to choose what to backup if you only have a small hard drive (40/80/160 MB) and a big external drive such 1TB or 2TB. Otherwise select “Let Me Choose“.   Click on “Setup Backup” to choose the files you wish to backup if you are being selective.   You need to select “Document Library” , “Pictures Library” and “Music Library” as a minimum plus “Video Library” if you have sufficient disk space on your backup drive. If you wish to backup your google drive data, you can locate it under C: -> users -> Your Name -> Google Drive . make sure just the “Google drive” checkbox is selected so as not to backup all those other unnecessary files. Now you have your files selected, you now need to tell backup when to work automatically. Microsoft backup default to every Sunday night at 7pm. Change this to “Daily” and a time when you know the computer will be switched on.   You should now see your backup in progress click on “View Details” to see the files being copied or press the “Backup Now” button to start the backup at anytime Related Posts and Articles TOP 6 CHECKS TO MAKE SURE YOUR COMPUTER IS PROTECTED FROM VIRUSES AND MALWARE HOW TO USE MICROSOFT’S DEFAULT BACKUP TO BACKUP TO AN EXTERNAL DEVICE HOW TO USE APPLE’s TIME MACHINE TO BACKUP TO AN EXTERNAL DEVICE Beware of scam emails about downloading Windows 10 OPENING AN EMAIL FROM AUSTRALIA POST HAS HAD 3 CLIENTS IN 3 DAYS LOSE ALL THEIR DATA TO THE CRYPTOLOCKER VIRUS How to avoid Computer Viruses – Stop using Bing Your Apple Mac has a Virus (this is NOT a Joke) PREVENT VIRUSES BY NOT ALLOWING OTHERS TO USE YOUR COMPUTER ACCOUNT HOW TO AVOID COMPUTER VIRUSES – STOP USING BING WINDOWS 8.1 USERS MOST LIKELY TO SUFFER ADOBE READER VIRUSES HOW CAN I TELL IF MY COMPUTER HAS A VIRUS? We name the Top 4 ways to store your data in the cloud for FREE (in August 2013) If you are looking for offsite storage and backup for your data, photos, music, documents etc. these 4 solutions offer you similar features but with varying amounts of storage. As you can see from the table below, once you get beyond the FREE storage limit, the prices for extra storage can start to be expensive. The following free storage limits and prices for additional storage were current in August 2013, but click on the links to each option to find out the latest deals for yourself (and please update the blog by leaving a comment). August 2013 Name FREE Storage Extra Storage Google Drive 15 GB extra 100 GB $4.99/month Microsoft Skydrive 7 GB extra 10 GB $20/year Apple iCloud 5 GB extra 10 GB $21/year Drop Box 2 GB extra 100 GB $99/year As a business we use Google Drive to store all our company records such as documents, spreadsheets, images, brochures, presentations etc. And now use the FREE and built in tools such as “Document” “Spreadsheet” “Presentation” and “Drawing” rather than Microsoft Office. We collaborate on documents with contractors and colleagues all over the world in real-time. If your an avid Word/Excel addict, simply configure the default storage directory to your local Google Drive on your PC and they will be synced automatically in the Google Drive cloud. Personally I use the Apple iCloud service to backup and share data among my Apple devices such as my iPhone, iPad and iMac. My pictures, music, contacts are stored automatically and my data backed up to be used on those devices anywhere in the world. If your a Microsoft geek with a Windows PC, Microsoft Phone etc Then Skydrive is probably for you and offers similar storage deals and pricing to Google Drive. The interface and workings appear to be a copy of drive. Drop box was the original “cloud” solution but is now struggling to stay in touch with the big three but it still has an army of loyal fans. As well as these four there are hundreds of cloud storage offerings. Just do a search for “Cloud Storage” … a Google Search of course 🙂 If you don’t want or can’t fix the problem yourself, give us a call and we can fix it. Come to us in Subiaco or we can come to you. When did you last backup your data?

Top 5 ways to backup and restore your data So when did you last backup your data? For many of you the answer will be NEVER, but its never too late to start. You don’t have to backup your entire computer but it is wise to backup “My Documents“, “My Pictures“, “My Music” etc on a regular basis. Whether you’re running Windows 10, 7,8 XP or Vista the procedure is quite easy and on a Mac or Apple device it’s even easier. What can you backup your data to? We offer you 5 choices. We actively encourage backing up your data locally (options 1, 2, 3 or 4) AND offsite (option 5). Your option choice will be determined by how much data you want to backup and whether you want to open the PC case and play with the computers internals. USB Flash or Thumb drives (option 1) For those with small amount of data, these little data hoarders are the favourites of spies and bookeepers the world over. They are available in sizes from 8Gb to 128GB and priced between $6 and $140 Their solid state memory construction with no moving parts makes them very robust and can easily be attached to a keyring or kept in a purse or a pocket. PROS: Portable, Lightweight, ease to use, ideal for backing up a small 40/80GB Hard drive on an old PC CONS: Easy to lose and misplace, maximum capacity USB External Hard Drive (option 2) For those with lots of data who want something portable then external Hard Drives will probably be for you. Simply plugin to a spare USB port and within a few seconds you have access to all that extra storage. USB External Hard Drives have tumbled in price in recent years with capacity doubling at the same time, so these make an ideal solution for making full backups of your data. USB External Hard Drives are available in sizes from 500Gb to 12TB and priced between $100 and $2,000 PROS: Portable, high storage capacity, easy of use CONS: Not immune to fire, theft, damage or failure. Easy to misplace or lose Network Attached Storage (NAS) (option 3) What is a NAS drive and why do I need one?   Solid State Drives (option 4) For those who don’t mind opening up the PC case and getting their hands dirty dusty Not really a backup drive but more of a replacement or secondary drive. These are solid memory Hard Disk Drives with no working parts for a laptop or PC. Solid Sate Drives (SSD’s) are available in sizes from 64GB to 256GB and priced between $200 and $750 PROS: Give PC’s much more speed, especially noticeable on games and programs using a lot of graphics. CONS: Need to be installed inside the PC or laptop case. Some degree of computer hardware knowledge is required. Small capacity. Internet “Cloud” storage (option 5) Unlimited cloud backup for $20 per month See Also Details on how to use Apples Time Machine can be found here. PPC Advertising v Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)

We can have your website listed at #1 in Google Searches for your preferred phrase or keyword within 7 days using PPC Advertising. You’ve put a lot of time, effort and expense into putting together your website. But is anyone visiting your site or finding it from an internet search? If not, it’s been an expensive and time consuming exercise with no return on your investment. There are many, many great websites out there that look fantastic and are full of useful information and great products. Thousands more are added every day, so there is a lot of competition to being seen in search results and to attain the exclusive #1 position in Google Rankings. No doubt you are already being bombarded by SEO companies (Search Engine Optimisation)  from around the world, claiming they are “the world’s best SEO company” and can guarantee you a “#1 Google listing”  (if you live in Perth you may have also noticed some very large billboards and expensive cars advertising the same message). SEO is the new snake-oil and SEO Companies are the new snake-oil-salesmen SEO companies usually want to charge you a lot of money initially with large ongoing monthly fees to maintain your ranking and with no guarantee of sucess. An alternative to SEO is PPC Advertising. PPC adverting sounds expensive, but it need not be if implemented correctly. The IT Guys have been utilising PPC Advertising in the form of Google Adwords and Bing Adwords, ourselves and on behalf of our clients for many years and getting highly qualified and filtered traffic to their websites for as little as 15c per lead (click)… hence the term PPC (pay-per-click). When SEO service companies talk of a #1 ranking in Google, they are talking about having your site or product appear in the #1 “Organic”  listing or position (unpaid) when users search for your company, product or service on their computer, phone or device. You can spend weeks or months and thousands of dollars getting your web page to #1 organically using SEO, only to find there are already one to three paid advertisements (PPC Advertising) above your very expensive Organic listing. What you have effectively paid for is a #2 to #4 listing. And it does not end there. Keeping your #1 organic ranking is an ongoing, expensive and time consuming exercise. SEO companies will tell you that Google and Bing users don’t look at advertisement but they are very wrong. We’ve been using PPC ourselves very successfully over the years and Google and Bing are making millions of dollars per day out of the service, they don’t make any money for organic listings. Organic listings make money for the SEO companies mainly. The only guaranteed way of getting your company, preferred search term or phrase to #1 or at least a first page ranking, is to pay for it using Google Adwords or Bing Adwords.   For only a few hundred dollars we will set you up with the necessary tools to get you going and have your advertisements listed. We will also teach you how to maintain and monitor the PPC service on an ongoing basis. We don’t charge ongoing monthly fees and you can always get free advise and help from your assigned Google account manager. However, if you wish us to provide ongoing assstance, help and monitoring of your account, we are happy to quote you for that also.   SEO Services v PPC Advertising SEO Services PPC Advertising Lead in Time to implement SEO Services v PPC Advertising Google and Bing refresh there listing once a month, so an initial listing would only happen between 1 and 30 days. SEO Techniques rely on linking to other sites and may not become apparent for 1 to 2 months As soon as Adwords accounts have been setup, PPC advertising can commence. This can be as quickly as 1 day. Lead in Time to make changes Required changes/tweaks made to fix mistakes or improve the listing will not become apparent for another 30 days (from date of change) Keywords can be instantly added and the changes to your adverts will take effect within an hour of implementation. (24 hrs for changes to advertisements) Ongoing Time/Costs Algorithms used to rank websites are constantly evolving and changing. A #1 listing last week, may slip to #20 within days. This requires constant changes and updating links etc which the SEO company will have to carry out meaning you have ongoing costs that may or may not improve your listing. As above, changes can be made instantly at any time, by your PPC Consultant or yourself. Your ranking can also be changed by either increasing or decreasing your keyword bids or budget. This can be carried out yourself or by a PPC Consultant. Can I switch listing on/off when not needed? Once listed, the site is very difficult to remove from the listing. If you are very busy and you’d rather not receive more enquiries (maybe your going on holiday for some time) you cannot simply pause or turn off an organic listing. You have full and instant control over your PPC advertising account. In can be paused or switched off within minutes. It can be configured to only display on certain days during certain time periods and to very specific geographical locations. Can I quickly list a new website? Google/Bing do not like new websites – Trying to get a website listed that is under 12 months old is almost impossible using SEO techniques Once the Adwords account has been approved and the Credit Card verified, advertising can usually commence within 24 hrs. How we work Time Line Approx Hours Activities Day 1 – 3 1 – 2 hrs Examine existing site title and header, create keyword report, agree with client on target keywords, phrases, audience, budget. Implement Adwords, Analytics, Webmaster Tools and establish baseline to measure against. Day 4 – 7 15 mins Agree with client, switch PPC advertising on. Day 14/21 1 hr […]

Computer Virus and Spyware Removal

We specialise in the complete removal of Computer Viruses, Malware, Spyware and other malicious and unwanted programs from your PC, Laptop or Macintosh Is your computer acting strangely and has become unresponsive? Are your friends getting spam from you? Are strange “popup” windows appearing randomly? Is your computer reporting programs or data no longer exists? Have you stopped receiving windows updates? Has your Anti-virus or Firewall switched itself off? Is your computer very slow or not starting properly? If you answered “Yes” to any of the above questions, chances are your PC, Laptop or Macintosh has probably become infected with a “Computer Virus” or “Spyware” (collectively known as Malware) and needs to be removed immediately. Some viruses are merely annoying (popup windows and advertising) others may stop your machine from working properly such as connecting to the internet or slowing it down. Others can corrupt your data or encrypt your data and then hold you to ransom until you pay the creator a sum of money (this is known as “Ransomware“). However the most dangerous ones are those that simply hide undetected and send personal details such as your bank details and passwords to the criminals who developed them. These are known as “Trojans” after the Trojan horse employed by the Spartans in ancient times. There are no quick-fixes when it comes to computer virus removal There are many programs for download both FREE and PAID that claim to get rid of 100% of all know viruses. DO NOT BELIEVE THAT CLAIM . Most of them actually give you MORE viruses. The ONLY reputable Anti-virus makers are AVG, McAfee, Symantec, Norton’s, Avira, Trend, Kaspersky but none of these programs will remove a virus …… they merely detect a computer virus before they activate. One of the few programs that does remove Malware and Viruses is called MalwareBytes but even that will not remove 100% of all viruses but is excellent at removing Spyware and Adware. Do not believe Mobile Computer Technicians that visit you at your home and claim to remove viruses in an hour or two. You can do the same as them for FREE by downloading a FREE copy of Malwarebytes. For a THOROUGH virus check and removal we need to have your computer for 4 to 24 hours and we will use two or three programs including a RESCUE DISK … that removes dangerous viruses such as Trojan’s by scanning every file on your PC using a non-windows operating system such as Ubuntu. The IT Guys (WA) use a unique in-house 12 step process that as well as removing viruses, checks and updates browsers, operating systems, browser add-ons, browser toolbars, anti-virus programs, anti-spyware programs, search-engines, non-essential programs, PUPs, Registry entries, Short-cuts and emails. Only by using such techniques can we guarantee that 100% of computer viruses have been removed. This is why we need you to bring your PC, Macintosh or Laptop to our office as the process cannot be done properly with a brief home-visit. By bring your infected computer, PC or Laptop to our Subiaco repair center we will save you up to 50% compared to the average call-out mobile Geek Computer Technician who will charge a minimum of $150 and not do a thorough job. Computer Viruses, Malware or Trojans are created by criminals or anarchists with the intention of disrupting your activities or more seriously trying to steal your passwords, bank account details or identity. Every PC or Laptop (not so much Apple products) needs to be protected by an Anti-virus program (Norton, McAfee, Symantec, AVG etc) and updated regularly to protect you from such attacks. However these programs cannot guarantee your safety 100% and if your system becomes infected, urgent steps need to be taken to fix the problem. If your Virus Checker is out of date it needs to be replaced or renewed to stop viruses returning to your computer. If you suspect your PC has become infected with a virus, please contact us   Call now for your FREE Advice and a quotation to remove the virus Remember that prevention is always better than cure. We can advise you on easy, inexpensive ways of protecting your PC. Give us a call today for some free advice.
