Apple’s latest macOS 10.14 (mojave) available Sep/Oct 2018

MacOS 10.14 (Mojave) is to be released in Sept/Oct 2018 with added features but dropping support for some models older than 2014 and all older than 2012 See full details below: As reported by MacWorld and MacRumours macOS 10.14 codenamed Mojave (pronounced mo-HAH-vee) is in final beta stages with a release sometime in September of October 2018. The new OS makes some Mac models and some 32-bit programs obsolete. As long as you are currently running macOS High-Sierra on your Mac computers this should not be an issue for some time but you will not be able to use the new features that come with Mojave. Only the following Macs support Mojave: iMac models from 2012 or later iMac Pro (from 2017) MacBook models from 2015 or later MacBook Pro models from 2012 or later MacBook Air models from 2012 or later Mac mini models from 2012 or later Mac Pro models from late 2013 (plus mid 2010 and mid 2012 models with recommend Metal-capable GPU) You’ll notice what that last option means – no more cheese grater Mac Pro support. A number of older programs and Apps, will not run on Mojave as reported by MacWorld : Adobe Illustrator CS5, Abobe InDesign CS5, Microsoft Excel 2011, Microsoft PowerPoint 2011, Microsoft Outlook 2011, Microsoft Word 2011 and more … For a full list of affected apps and how to identify 32 bit Apps currently installed, go the following MacWorld article: https://www.macworld.co.uk/feature/mac-software/apps-work-macos-mojave-3678735/ If you are running 32 bit Apps in High-Sierra, you may see a message like the following when you use a 32 bit application. If you are running macOS High Sierra on a device not supported by Mojave, do not worry. YET. As long as Apple keep releasing security updates for High Sierra, you should not be faced with Safari not opening up banking sites etc. Apple usually continue to support the current macOS and two previous ones only. On 9th July 2018, support for Safari was still current for: OS X El Capitan 10.11.6 macOS Sierra 10.12.6 macOS High Sierra 10.13.6 If Apple follow their usual pattern, It is safe to assume that support for El Capitan will be dropped and Safari will cease to become secure on banking websites after October 2018 however Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox browser should still continue to work. :jk:

Windows 7 no longer available on new laptop purchases!!

Major manufacturers such as Dell, Toshiba and Lenovo aren no longer selling computers with the option of Windows 7 Pro.   It appears that the latest CPU chips produced by intel, will no longer support Windows 7 and most manufacturers (with the exception of HP) are no longer offering the downgrade option from Windows 10 Pro to Windows 7 Pro. If you already have Windows 7 on a computer or laptop, Microsoft support is extended until 2020, so no need to start panicking yet. Just remember, once your current hardware dies, you will have little choice but to embrace Windows 10. However, there are always exceptions to the rule. Look for old-stock on sites such as Ebay for computers being shipped with the Windows 7 option Buy a second-hand computer with Windows 7 installed Run Windows 7 in a “virtual-window” using a product such as VMWare in your Windows 10 environment Install Windows 7 on a Mac using “Bootcamp” or “Parallels“ Ditch Windows and buy a Mac Or just get used to the fact that Windows 7  already has one-foot-in-the-grave and embrace Windows 10. It’s not that bad once you get used to it 🙂 How old is my Windows PC? :jk:

If you don’t backup your phone and computer data, you stand a high risk of losing everything.

Remember the old drink-driving advert that said “If you drink and drive your a bloody idiot”? Well the same can be said for people and their data. We get many people coming through our doors with sad stories about breaking their phone and losing recent holiday pics or having 10 years of baby-photos on an old computer that has just died. We’ve seen the tears and disappointment in their faces and in about 50% of all cases have not been able to recover their data. The sad thing is, these incidents are all totally avoidable if only they spent a few minutes BACKING UP THEIR DATA. Ideally in two places (locally and in the cloud). We’ve covered this topic many many times in our posts, so here are a few links to past posts and articles. Backing up Android or Google Phone (Samsung etc) Backing up Apple iPhone, iPad, iMac, Macbook Backing up Windows Computers Backing up Servers Backing up any device to the Cloud Unlimited cloud backup for $20 per month We always suggest backing up both “locally” and to “the cloud”, the following article explains the options and the pricing. How to avoid nuisance telephone calls and scammers

Do you have a “Land-Line” Telephone? or know an elderly friend or relative that does? We daily either hear of an elderly customer falling foul of a telephone scammer or we are asked to fix computers that have been “hacked” by someone calling on a land-line and claiming to be from “Telstra” or “Microsoft” There are two easy solution that are both free FREE. Rip the phone out of the wall and use a mobile phone for all calls. (it cost money to call a mobile phone so scammers are reluctant to do so)or If you are a Telstra customer, use “Telstra Home Messages 101” (see below) for non-Telstra customers, install an answering machine. Telstra Customers Simply divert all calls to Home Messages 101, most scammers will not leave a message because they would then have to provide a return telephone number that you can report to the Police. NON-TELSTRA Customers Simply install a telephone answering machine, do NOT answer the phone, genuine callers will leave a message, frausters are less likely to do so. You can then return genuine calls at your leisure and ignore the scammers and the telemarketers. :jk:

Outlook E-mail Sending Issue Fix

Having problems sending email when using Outlook? Are others having problems emailing you from Outlook? If you or a colleague has recently updated their email server, moved to a new email provider, changed to Microsoft Hosted Exchange or a new email host, then Microsoft Outlook may experience problems in either sending emails or receiving emails from other people. This is because Outlook has a feature called “Auto-complete“. As you start typing a name, if that name has been used before it maybe automatically be suggested in a list (see above example). The AutoSuggest/Auto-Complete feature of Outlook keeps a cache of addresses you’ve recently used. As well as the email address, the cache also keeps details of the last server sent to. If the server has changed, Outlook may not be able to send the email and may return an error. In some cases Outlook may simply send the email, no error is returned, the email does not bounce but the recipient does not receive that email as it has been sent to the old email server. If your are having issues emailing someone or other people are having problems emailing you, try deleting the email address from the Microsoft Outlook Auto-complete as follows:   Outlook for Windows 2010, 2013, 2016, 2019 In Outlook 2010 and Outlook 2013/16/19, you can click on the X icon on the right side of the selected list item to delete it from the suggestion list (but not from the Suggested Contacts folder). Another method, in Outlook 2010, is to remove the contact item from the Suggested Contacts folder. To see all your Contact folders, switch to the Contacts Navigation (keyboard shortcut: CTRL+3). Another method: Select the unwanted name or e-mail address by using the UP ARROW or DOWN ARROW key. Press DELETE. Then shut Outlook, reopen it, create a new email and type in the email address. Outlook should no longer find the old address details in the Autocomplete cache. Outlook For Mac The Outlook for Mac version is slightly different to the Windows Version. The Auto-Complete still provides suggestions via a drop-down list Some entries that have errors can be removed by clicking on the “X” next to the name. For others, select the person. Hover over the name with the mouse cursor and a window appears, select the “Contact” icon Once the Contact window appears, click on the “Delete” symbol to remove the entry. Click the “OK” button to confirm. Close the window, create a new mail and type the email address as a new entry. :jk:

Windows 10 Problem Fixing Service

Problems with Windows 10 can usually be fixed by making sure all the latest updates have been installed correctly. Follow the guide below or bring to our Subiaco workshop and we can fix the problem for you.   However, Windows 10 updates will often fail without notifying the user and cause the computer to behave erratically. This has been a particular problem on recent update (October/November 2017) called  “Feature Update to Windows 10 version 1709” and “Cumulative Update for Windows 10 version 1607“ To check that Windows 10 has all the correct updates, run Windows Update by one of the following means. Select the Start  button, then select Settings  > Update & security  > Windows Update. . Or use the search  facility and search for “Windows Update” 3. Or through “Control Panel”   4. Or by clicking on the “Systems Settings” button From here select “Update & Security” then “Check For Updates“, even though the status may say “Your Device is up to date“, This may be incorrect….. please carry out the following checks     Click on “View Installed Update History” – Do you see one or more “failed to install” messages? If you do, you need to “fix” these failing updates. Even if you dont, try running the troubleshooter just to be on the safe side. The easiest way of performing the “fix” is to bring it into the IT Guys and we will fix this and any other issue or do the following. However, if you wish to fix these issues yourself, try the following. Step 1 – in Settings select “Troubleshoot” > “Windows Update” Step 2 – Click “Run the troubleshooter” Step 3 – If any fixes are found select “Apply this fix“   Step 4 –  Windows will either start downloading any required updates it finds. To make sure all required updates have been installed, click the “Check for Updates” button again. If the troubleshooter does not fix the issues, you may need to manually download the update to a CD or USB and install it from there. You can find the link to the Windows 10 ISO here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10ISO The tool will download, then check for the latest version of Windows 10, which includes the Fall Creators Update. Once downloaded, run it, then select ‘Update Now’. The tool will do the rest. Your PC will restart a few times – so save any work first – and then your PC will be updated with the Fall Creators Update, while all your files and settings will remain where they were. :jk:   How to update Windows Operating Systems Windows updates failing :jk:

How are you preventing staff opening emails that could ruin your business?

Your Business Computers may be protected from Computer Viruses but it’s Phishing you really need to worry about. Anti-Virus programs (AVG, Nortons etc) DO NOT protect your business from “Phishing”. But there is a solution. No matter how up-to-date your virus protection or operating system (OS) is, it is normally human-error that gives scammers the information they need to empty your bank accounts, encrypt your data files, disrupt your business and steal your personal information. Clicking on any links in emails such as the above, can fool staff members into giving their login and password details away or they can infect your browser or computer with malware that tracks the sites they visit and then captures the login and passwords used to access those site. This practice is known as “Phishing” Some email accounts offer better protection against malicious emails, spam, phishing and virus attachments than others. Unfortunately FREE and ISP email accounts such as Outlook.com/Hotmail, Gmail, Yahoo, iCloud, Bigpond, iiNet, Westnet etc. do not offer a great deal of protection from SPAM emails, phishing emails, emails containing viruses and Ransomware. Only Microsoft Hosted Exchange is providing secure email accounts that provide a level of spam detection. Microsoft Hosted Exchange mailboxes start from only $6.05 per mailbox per month. Not a lot of money to give you peace of mind. In the past users have relied on 3rd party Anti-Virus programs to protect them from computer viruses which were being delivered as a malicious program/attachment to an email. And a whole industry of anti-virus software providers has blossomed. Unfortunately, todays threats are mostly from emails trying to send users to fake websites where there is an attempt to capture your login details, password, credit-card, banking details or identity information such as DOB, Passport number, Drivers licence number and postal address. This is known as Phishing   Avast/AVG, Trend, Symantec, Mcafee, Microsoft etc all offer program or services that attempt to remove malicious links and malware from incoming emails. Some are better than others and some are very complicated to setup and involve re-directing emails to servers that detect and remove malicious links and attachments before sending the cleaned mail back to the client. The best available protection again Phishing is from Microsoft and is called “Advanced Threat Protection” or “ATP” and is available to anyone using the following Microsoft Hosted Exchange or Microsoft Office 365  Business or Enterprise subscription plans. Exchange Online Plan 1, Exchange Online Plan 2, Exchange Online Kiosk, Exchange Online Protection, Office 365 Business Essentials, Office 365 Business Premium, Office 365 Enterprise E1, Office 365 Enterprise E2, Office 365 Enterprise E3, Office 365 Enterprise E4, Office 365 Enterprise K1, Office 365 Enterprise K2, Office 365 Education.
