This is often evident when no lights, fan or flickering occur when trying to turn the device on. Graphics Card (GPU) Issues Lines on the screen can indicate a failed GPU. These can be replaced by Apple if under 5 years old by Apple. The GPU on Macbook’s are built into the mother-board and require a full motherboard replacement which is not usually an economic solution. Motherboard Issues If the mother-board (main circuitry board) or processor have failed they can be replaced by Apple if under 5 years old.  Otherwise we advise the computer will be uneconomical to repair. Second hand motherboards from overseas (USD 400 – 500) are available, but these are “refurbished” boards by non-apple suppliers and there is no guarantee that they will work initially or after a few months, so we recommend NOT replacing a failed motherboard but purchasing a new computer. LCD Screen Issues These can be replaced by Apple if under 3 years old or we can source second-hand parts, usually from overseas for older models. However, second hand parts come without warranty. On Apple Macbooks it is not simply a matter of replacing the LCD, the whole top-case needs to be replaced and this can often be expensive. Email your serial number to support@itguyswa.com.au for a quote. Macbook Power Issues Apple MagSafe Power Pack’s should be replaced with genuine parts from Apple here. We do not supply these. Macbook Battery Issues The IT Guys offer a Macbook Battery Replacement service for Macbooks’, Macbook Pro and Macbook Air depending on the model number (Non-Retina Macbooks) Our batteries and workmanship are guaranteed for 12 months and work is carried out by Apple trained and authorised Technicians. How to stop emails going to junk folder

Are you missing important emails because they keep going to the junk folder? Although 90% of the emails in your junk folder are probably genuinely “junk” or “spam“, the occasional important and genuine email will end up there. The reasons for this are numerous and include suspicious attachments, being on a spam blacklist and in many cases a poorly configured email server. If you are running the latest version of Microsoft Office 365, Outlook (for Windows) provides a very easy way way to “trust” or “un-block” genuine email addresses. Find the email in your junk folder and click on it. Now with your mouse do a “right-click” and a menu appears (see picture above), select “Junk” and another sub menu appears. If the email is from an individual choose “Not Junk” or “Never Block Sender“, if the email is from a list or newsletter you subscribe to, select “Never Block this Group or Mailing List“. It’s as simple as that. Unfortunately earlier versions of Outlook, Mac Mail and Web Mail Clients are not as easy to configure. What can be done to stop email spam, email viruses and Ransomware

Some email accounts offer better protection against malicious emails, spam, phishing and virus attachments than others. Unfortunately FREE email accounts such as Outlook.com/Hotmail, Gmail, Yahoo, iCloud etc. do not offer a great deal of protection from SPAM emails, phishing emails, emails containing viruses and Ransomware. Paid or ISP provided email accounts offer better protection. Microsoft Hosted Exchange is an industry leader in providing secure email accounts that provide a level of spam detection. Some ISP’s such as Telstra and iiNet also offer paid add-on services that claim to offer spam and virus protection but not at the same level. In the past users have relied on 3rd party Anti-Virus programs to protect them from computer viruses which were being delivered as a malicious program/attachment to an email. And a whole industry of anti-virus software providers has blossomed. Unfortunately, todays threats are mostly from emails trying to send users to fake websites where there is an attempt to capture your login details, password, credit-card, banking details or identity information such as DOB, Passport number, Drivers licence number and postal address. This is known as Phishing Todays Computers and iPads may be protected from Computer Viruses but it’s Phishing you really need to worry about. No matter how up-to-date your virus protection or operating system (OS) is, it is normally human-error that gives scammers the information they need to empty your bank accounts and steal your personal information. What is Phishing and how can I defend against it? Phishing in Apple Mail To report spam or other suspicious emails that you receive in your iCloud.com, me.com, or mac.com Inbox, please send them to abuse@icloud.com. Phishing in Google Mail (Gmail.com) If you have a gmail account you can report phishing emails by, Opening the message in Gmail, Next to Reply – click the Down arrow, then click Report phishing. Avast/AVG, Trend, Symantec, Mcafee, Microsoft etc all offer program or services that attempt to remove malicious links and malware from incoming emails. Some are better than others and some are very complicated to setup and involve re-directing emails to servers that detect and remove malicious links and attachments before sending the cleaned mail back to the client. The best available protection again Phishing is from Microsoft and is called “Advanced Threat Protection” or “ATP” and is available to anyone using the following Office 365 subscription plans: Exchange Online Plan 1, Exchange Online Plan 2, Exchange Online Kiosk, Exchange Online Protection, Office 365 Business Essentials, Office 365 Business Premium, Office 365 Enterprise E1, Office 365 Enterprise E2, Office 365 Enterprise E3, Office 365 Enterprise E4, Office 365 Enterprise K1, Office 365 Enterprise K2, Office 365 Education.   All the above packages contain Microsoft Hosted Exchange mailboxes. If your Office version does NOT contain a hosted mailbox, it can be added by purchasing the Exchange Online Plan 1 or upgrading Office to at least Office 365 Business Premium. To upgrade to Hosted Exchange or Business Premium and protect yourself by employing Microsoft Advance Protection, contact us for a quote. :jk:

Obsolete or Vintage Macs over 5 years old and needing a fix? Apple are not interested!!

Apple and Apple Authorised service centers have been told not to repair any iMac, Mac, Air or Macbook over 5 years old (Vintage or Obsolete) Although we are not privy to Apple’s reasoning, due to the fact that recent models have been designed NOT to be upgradable, we are under the impression that Apple would like you to buy a new Apple computer at least every five years. Apple’s trade-in Service “Apple Giveback” Luckily for you The IT Guys (WA) are not restricted by this, even though we employ qualified and authorised Apple technicians, so we can work on Apple computers of any age and specialise in repairing and upgrading “vintage” and “obsolete” (over 5 years old) Mac Computers and Laptops. :jk: iMac Upgrades – Apple iMac Upgrades So if you live in Western Australia and you would like to repair or upgrade your Apple computer, bring it, mail it or courier it to The IT Guys, 315 Rokeby Road, Subiaco, Western Australia.
