Fix Entourage Problems

Will Entourage 2008 or earlier still work on current Mac OSx such as Sierra, El Capitan and Yosemite?    Office 2008 including Entourage has not been supported my Microsoft since 2013     The golden rule here … If it aint broke…don’t fix it If Entourage is still working on your Mac, then DO NOT UPGRADE the operating system as chances are, you will break it. Even Office 2011 is being phased out and cannot be downloaded from Microsoft site any more as the only version of Office For Mac now been supported and updated is Office 365 (2013 or 2016). However, DO NOT think that by loading the latest office it will magically transfer all data from Entourage. IT WILL NOT (read on) Entourage Versions Entourage 2001, included with Microsoft Office 2001 (version 9) Entourage X, included with Office X (version X) Entourage 2004,[20] included with Office 2004 for Mac (version 11) Entourage 2008, included with Office 2008 for Mac (version 12) Entourage 2008 Web Services Edition, separate download from Microsoft (version 13) Entourage was replaced by Outlook for Macintosh in Microsoft Office for Mac 2011, released on October 26, 2010. Does Entourage work with Sierra? Definitely NOT Does Entourage work with El Capitan? Possibly if in Office 2008? Microsoft issued an update to Mac Office 2008 in May 2016 found here However, before attempting the update we suggest a full export of all emails from Entourage as detailed below. Does Entourage work with Yosemite? Possibly if in Office 2008? Microsoft issued an update to Mac Office 2008 in May 2016 found here However, before attempting the update we suggest a full export of all emails from Entourage as detailed below. We strongly suggest installing Office 365 immediately, especially if using Entourage for emails but only AFTER you have manually exported ALL the Entourage data How to export emails, folders, contacts and appointments out of Entourage If Entourage is still operating, your in luck. There are a number of ways to export the data to Apple mail or Microsoft Outlook. Some methods are covered here http://www.office.mvps.org/import_export/manual_04_08.html but generally it is a slow and tedious procedure that the IT guys have had to do for many clients. Beat the boredom. How to watch BBC, ITV, Netflix USA in Australia during lockdown

Run out of things to watch on Australian Netflix, Prime, Foxtel, ABC, SBS, 7,9 & 10? Even before my coronavirus-self-isolation it was increasingly difficult to find new programs to watch in Australia (especially if your looking for something humorous and light-hearted) Yet the content does exist…. if you live in the UK or Ireland, even the US. There is an endless supply of TV content you can watch from the UK and the US, as long as you can get past the geo-restrictions. “What are geo-restictions?” – Due to international copyright laws, some TV content is only allowed to be viewed in certain countries. It is “geo-restricted“. If it is detected that you are trying to view content from a country outside of a geo-restriction … ie an Australian user trying to view British Programs, your attempts will be blocked. This is done because each computer has an invisible “IP Address” which gives out the country and sometimes the city that you or your ISP (Internet-Service-Provider ie Telstra, iiNet, Optus etc.) are located, making it easy to geo-restrict access. A ludicrous law in this day of global-consumption but until the entertainment industries gets over itself, Australia will continue to be a backwater in terms of what-we-get-to-see and when-we-get-to-see-it because of geo-restrictions. You may have experienced such censorship yourself while trying to access SBS or ABC iView from your hotel in Bali, Hong Kong or Thailand with images such as these. Access to overseas TV content (or Australian content while overseas) is available by using a VPN (Virtual-Private-Network) A VPN, or virtual private network, is a secure tunnel between your device and the internet. VPNs are used to protect your online traffic from snooping, interference, and censorship. A typical use of a VPN is to provide secure internet access between company servers and home computers using Microsoft RDC (Remote Desktop Connection) VPN’s can also act as a proxy, allowing you to mask or change your location and surf the web anonymously from wherever you want. In this way it is used to fool the source of a website or content streamer into believing the source user is from another IP address, one already located close-by or at least in the same country. In this way, content that would normally be inaccessible to users outside of that country becomes available because the source website believes it is being accessed from within that country. Effective VPN clients are NOT Free but not that expensive either. There are a number of companies that advertise FREE VPN’s and some work for a limited time, but they are all trying to sell you their paid VPN service. Rather than struggle with Free VPN services and browser add-ins such a Hola, we recommend purchasing a tried-and-test VPN client VPN Guru lists it’s top 6 VPN clients as Express VPN, NordVPN, UltraVPN, SurfShark, Cyber Ghost, SafeVPN and Privacy Web Going with #1 choice, We tried and tested Express VPN One Express VPN licence allows you to install the client on up to 5 devices be that Windows, MacOS, iOS. We installed on an iPad and a Mac computer and both worked very well, with one or two caveats Downloading the ExpressVPN desktop app To get started, go to ExpressVPN.com and select the Get Started option at the top. A single ExpressVPN subscription comes with easy-to-use apps for every device you own. Mac, Windows, Android, iOS, Linux, routers etc Pick the plan you want, add your email, and enter payment details. Note that ExpressVPN offers a 30-day money back satisfaction guarantee. If applying via the Apple App store or Google Play, you may also get a 7 day free-trial. Click Join Now. Next, choose a password or accept the one generated for you. (Be sure your password includes a few extra characters, numbers, and plenty of characters in upper and lowercase.) You will then receive an activation code. Keep this in a secret place – meaning, not on a sticky note on your desktop. Installing ExpressVPN on desktop Installing ExpressVPN is easy on a desktop or laptop – although there are a few extra steps compared to the mobile client. For the desktop, download the client and install it. The good thing about a client like ExpressVPN is that it is remarkably easy to install and configure. You’ve actually already done the hardest steps – choosing your plan and adding payment details. With the client, sign-in using the account you just created. Enter your activation code. Decide if you want to launch a startup and if you want to send a crash report and other data to improve the product. Your next step is the most important one of all – selecting the location of the server. If you wish to access TV channels in the UK, choose a UK server, if US channels, choose a US server etc. Click the big power icon to connect. This will make your Internet connection secure. Once you connect with ExpressVPN, the app will run in the background and there’s nothing more to do to use the VPN, although you can configure features and change settings. You may notice a decrease in Internet speed while the VPN is switched on, so it maybe recommended to only have it switched on while requiring it. However, if you are using the VPN simply to make your connections secure, choose the home location closest to you. Downloading the ExpressVPN mobile app Like any good service, ExpressVPN is available both on Apple iOS and Android – in fact, it tops our list of the best Android VPN apps – and the client works like any other app. With the mobile app, you have the choice to start a seven-day trial. You can find it at the App Store or Play Store, or you can simply visit the ExpressVPN website to look for the mobile install. Once you find the app, verify that the logo matches what you see on the ExpressVPN site (a V logo with wings). This is important […]

Smart wiring – Is it really necessary?

Is Smart Wiring really necessary? Is it worth spending $3 – $15k on smart wiring?   Is Smart Wiring really necessary? and what is it? Today, just about every new house comes with a “smart-wiring” package, supposed to make your house “future-proof“. That statement may have been true 10 years ago but today it is NOT. We explain why. What is a “smart-wired” or “smart-wiring” home?     You see many houses being advertised as “smart” or “smart-wired” (smart-wiring) these days. Being “smart” does not mean that the house can think for itself or turn the lights on and off as you enter or leave a room (see a definition of smart home)… Smart in this case refers to the fact that it has been “hard-wired” with TV Aerial (coaxial), Foxtel (coaxial), Telephone and Ethernet (Networking and Security) cabling back to a central “junction box”, “smart-wiring panel”  or “hub” usually located in a cupboard, garage or utility room. From the central hub, cables are run to various points in the house and terminating in wall plates such as the following. The true definition of smart wiring is defined here as a system that enables the combination of many different types of wires used around the home into a single location, which allows for the integration of many different smart home systems and sensors throughout your home, and the capacity to add more at a later date if you want to do so including lighting, security, internet communications, security systems and audio-visual or home entertainment systems. Having the ability to turn lights, air-conditioning or the oven on via your smart phone or schedule is a component of “home-automation”. A smart home may feature smart-wiring to help you achieve home-automation but it is not the same thing. The IT Guys (WA) can assist you in smart-wiring your home and offer alternatives that can save you a great deal of money. Contact us on 08 6118 2601 or email us at support@itguyswa.com.au for a FREE assessment. What does a Smart-Wiring Package give me? When building a new house, you may be given the option of adding a “smart-wiring” package at an additional cost. This will supposedly provide internet access through the home and is usually sub contracted to a smart-home sub-contractor specialist. To be honest, the builders electrical sub-contractors can do this work themselves but prefer to subcontract the work out as many electricians do not like installing and especially “terminating” Ethernet Wiring. Unfortunately, your builder will unlikely offer you a number of alternative smart-wiring-contractors. In Western Australia, one company in particular appear to have a strangle-hold over the major building companies. (For legal reasons we are not allowed to mention the companies name) Most major builders will NOT allow other smart-wiring contractors onto their sites during the building phase, leaving you with only two choices. Install their inferior and outdated smart-wiring package at great expense and then update it when you move in, or Save your money. Give us a call and install the correct package once you have moved in. A large multi-floored house can have high-speed WI-FI and cabled internet starting at only $500 + cabling (see below) If you are being sold such an “add-on” make sure you know in detail, what you are being quoted on by your builder, renovator, electrician and/or “smart-home” installer. Do not be pressured into accepting their proposal straight away. Ask for full details of what you are getting and then come and discuss the suitability of their proposal with us. For $78 bring your plans and/or the installers proposal to our office (or email them to us if you cannot make it to our office) and we can advise you on the suitability of their proposal. You can make payment over the phone by credit card. Ask yourself these questions…. How are Smart-phones, iPads and modern notebooks and laptops with no ethernet port supposed to pickup internet through the house when no wi-fi access points (WAPs) are supplied in the proposed package?? Some of these Smart-Wiring companies are living in the past, still installing outdated technology (hard-ethernet-wiring) and not making any provision for wi-fi coverage. Below we offer a number of Wireless (Wi-Fi) Smart-Wiring-Solutions. Wireless Smart-Wired-Home solutions for extra large sized homes with multiple floors from $1,559 Wireless Smart-Wired-Home solutions for large sized homes from $1,369 Wireless Smart-Wired-Home solutions for medium sized homes $1,100 Wireless Smart-Wired-Home solutions for small homes from $462 Wireless Smart-Wired-Home solutions for small unit or apartment from $428 Building or Renovating? Make yours a Smart-Wired Wi-Fi enabled Home for less than $1,000 Do I need ethernet points in the wall, to connect my TV? Possibly, if you do not have strong wi-fi and/or your TV is not Wi-Fi enabled. (Apple TV or Telstra TV can get around this issue as they are wi-fi enabled) Any TV purchased in the last few years will most likely be a “Smart-TV” and will connect to the Internet and streaming services such as Netflix, Stan, Amazon, iView etc via Wi-Fi or hard-wired cabling. A Smart-TV uses either a hard-wired Ethernet connection or built-in Wi-Fi to connect to a home network for internet access. Most models today have built-in Wi-Fi, but check that it does before you buy a new one. Non-Smart TV’s can also use streaming services such as Netflix over the Wi-Fi by purchasing “Apple-TV” or “Telstra-TV” but if you wish to watch standard free-to-air TV or “Fetch-TV”   you will need to have hard-wired TV co-axial cabling and hard-wired Ethernet cabling to an outlet near your TV. If you are using external speakers such as the Sonos or Bose Playbar or Soundbar check to see if they will connect to your music system. You may need to connect them to your network using an Ethernet cable but most can do so using an Optical-Audio cable between your TV and the Soundbar. This allows the sound-bar to operate as an external TV speaker as well as a part of your music system. FETCH-TV boxes also need […]

How to restrict an iPhone to phone-only use

How to give an iPhone to a child and restrict it ONLY to be used as a Phone (Disable Texting, E-mail, Apps and Internet Access) Many parents want to keep in touch with their children when out of the house and are supplying them with smart-phones (iPhone, Android, Samsung) in order to do so. However, having a smart-phones also gives unrestricted access to texting, E-Mails, Apps and unfiltered Internet Access, not a good thing for an impressionable child. There are two solutions to the problem.   Solution #1 – Non-Smart Phone Solution It is possible to still purchase non-smart phones such as the following “flip-phone“: However, many a “teen” or “tween” would probably be too embarrassed to let it be known to their peers that they were having to use 80’s tech. Plus you can still message (SMS) on one of these ancient flip-phones even though they don’t have the “Internet” and “Apps” Which brings us to a more elegant solution Solution #2 – Restrict the smart-phone to only be used for telephone calls. How to Restrict an iPhone or iPad There is a built-in feature on Apple iPhones and iPads (iOS) called Guided-Access and has been available for some time although most people would not know of its existence. You can also use this setting to restrict access to a single Application (App) on an iPad or iPhone, such as a Game or in this case, the Phone App.   You could also use this feature to restrict an iPhone or iPad to a single game (app) or letting someone use your phone to make an emergency call or any situation where you want to “lock” access to only one game or application and not give the user free-reign over the devices apps and data. How to restrict an iPhone to Phone use only 1. Setting up Guided Access for the first time This part is quite a few steps, but you only need to do this once. From then on the feature is turn on and off my means of a “triple-click” on the Home Button   2. First Time Setup.   Open Settings -> Accessibility 3. Select “Guided Access” 4. Turn “Guided Access” On Once switched “On” “Guided Access” Options appear as follows, not that you switch it on by hitting the “home” button three times (triple-click) and you can set a pass code to enable and disable the feature. You can even set a time limit for the access and restrict certain parts of the screen being accessed. Set a passcode of your choosing …preferably not the same one used to unlock the phone   It is now all set to use…. next time you triple-click the home button. Using Guided Access to restrict access to only one application Locate your desired Application on your iPhone or iPad, such as the Phone App Start the Application and hit the Home button three times (Triple-click), and see the Guided Access menu appear for the Game/Application …simply click on “Guided Access” and a tick appears next to the menu option. (You will see a brief message saying “Guided Access Started”) Now the phone is restricted to this one App and will remain so until you triple-click the home button, enter the passcode and click  “End” in the top-left of the Guided Access Screen to return the device to normal operations. You can find more information on the feature on the Apple site. iOS also has a feature called “Restrictions“which give Parental Control over a number of features and Apps but surprisingly still allows access to emails??? You can check the option out yourself by going to Setting >> General >> Restrictions and “Enable Restrictions” See the Apple page “How to use parental controls on your child’s iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch”   How to restrict an Android Phone to phone-only use If you would like any of these features to be implemented on a phone and cannot (or do not want) to do it yourself, bring it into our office and we will set it up for you for $78 incl GST.
