Mac Upgrades

Upgrades are available on most Apple Mac Computers iMac, Macbook, Mac Mini, Macbook Air Most Mac Computers can be upgraded with more memory to make it run like a new model. Memory can be in the form of RAM or Storage Space such as HDD or SSD If your computer does not have a minimum of 4MB RAM memory that will need to be upgraded to run the latest operating systems such as Sierra and High Sierra but the biggest performance upgrade is to replace the standard Hard Disk (HDD) with a super fast Solid State Drive (SSD) Very old models may not be able to be upgraded to the latest Operating System but will still benefit from an increase in memory. Hard Disk Drives (HDD) over 4 years old should be replaced with another HDD or SSD. This alone will give a noticeable performance increase. To find out if or how much your Apple Computer can be upgraded, you firstly need your computers serial number which can be found on the underside of MacBooks or the base of the stand on iMacs or click on “About this Mac“. Once you have your serial number send an email to support@itguyswa.com and we can then give you a written quote of options that will suit your Apple Most early Mac’s were shipped with as little as 512 MB of RAM (Internal Memory for running programs) new Mac’s are now supplied with either 8 or 16 GB, this is the amount of memory Apple recommends for their latest operating systems such as Sierra and High Sierra, and a warning here, if you wish to upgrade to the latest operating systems such your Mac will need a MINIMUM of 4GB RAM Depending on the age of your Mac, you can upgrade RAM up to 32 GB but it varies per model. Another way of finding out the type of RAM your computer supports is the click on “About This Mac” -> “Memory” this will show the type of RAM installed and the number of RAM slots available. RAM for Mac’s varies in price from model to model but is generally around $75 for 4 GB plus installation cost. For an accurate quotation, please send an email to support@itguyswa.com  with your Mac serial number. Upgrading the RAM on your Mac will make your programs run faster, especially if you are running more than one application at a time. However it will not increase your startup time or the performance of applications that access the HDD a great deal such as databases and video editing. To increase this speed, upgrade or add a SSD (Solid State Drive). See below for upgrade details on your particular type of Mac. http://dev.itguyswa.com.au/macbook-air-upgrades/ Macbook Upgrades – Apple Macbook and Macbook Pro Upgrades iMac Upgrades – Apple iMac Upgrades Mac Mini Upgrades – Apple Mac Mini Upgrades   Need more help? How to switch on OSx and App updates for iMac/Macbook

How to switch on Automatic OSx updates and App updates for Apple iMac’s and Apple Macbook’s iMac and Macbook users can have OS and Apps automatically updated and installed by doing the following. In your iMac, Macbook, Mac Mini, Open up “System Preferences” (there are a number of ways to do this) including the following : In “System Preferences” select “App Store” in “App-Store” select all the options to ensure that both OS X updates and App updates will be Automatically Installed   The page will indicate when updates were last checked, click on the “Check Now” button to look for yourself. The second way to do this is to open “About This Mac” from the Apple Icon ..and then click on “Software Update” This will take you to the “App Store” where available updates (if any) will be shown to you. App Store – Checks for available Updates If there are NO updates available, you will be greeted my a similar message as below: If updates ARE AVAILABLE, you will encounter a message like the following, which may give you the choice of installing a major update such as Yosemite or El Capitan or Sierra Or you may be offered updates to individual programs such as Safari or Mail or in this case “the Unarchiver” Or you maybe given the choice of installing security updates If given such a choice, it is safest to click on “Update All” rather than picking and choosing, but be aware of the following: Backup – Make a full time machine backup or (update your current backup) of your iMac/Macbook BEFORE downloading and installing updates. Power – Don’t do any updates if only running on battery. Plug the charger in. Failed/part updates because of power loss may corrupt your OS. Internet – Ideally connect to the internet with an Ethernet wire rather than over WIFI. Failed/part updates because of internet loss may corrupt your OS. Restart – Remember to Restart or ShutDown the Computer, leave a few seconds and then restart. Only then will the updates install. Shutting a MacBook lid DOES NOT turn the Computer off. It merely puts it to sleep and updates are not installed. It is very important to keep Apple’s Operating System (OSx) and Apps updated to avoid security and compatibilities with iPhones and iPads. If you need assistance in checking the above and performing the updates, give us a call on 08 6365 5603 and make an appointment to come and see us. How to get rid of “Ask.com” toolbar and search

Is the “Ask” toolbar or “search” engine a virus and should I remove it? Being in the business of repairing Computers every day, it is astonishing how many PC’s we come across that either have the “Ask.Com” searchbar or “Ask.Com” as the default search engine Ask.com is a legitimate website, which declares that its mission is to answer users’ questions with the best information from the web and from the real people, and increase personal knowledge by empowering people with answers. However there are lots of complaints about having been redirected to ask.com website without willing to do that. According to users, no matter which browser you decide to use, Google Chrome, Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox or other one, you may find yourself redirected to Ask.com. This unfair activity is used for one main aim – to make people visit predetermined websites. Ask.com is not a virus. However, it is promoted using quite dubious methods. How to avoid Computer Viruses – Stop using Bing

If you use Microsoft Bing as your Search Engine you are more likely to become infected with Adobe Reader Computer Viruses The IT Guys (WA) remove a lot of computer viruses on behalf of our clients who are mostly new or recent Windows 8 purchasers used to using Windows 7!! The reasons ….. Internet Explorer, Bing and Adobe Reader!!!! Let me explain…… in addition to removing computer viruses, we are also interested in how they are contracted. After speaking to hundreds of clients we started seeing a few common patterns and one pattern in particular. These clients will have recently purchased a laptop of desktop computer with Windows 8.1 operating system usually pre-installed, after setting up their mail and trying to open a PDF attachment with the Windows 8.1 built in PDF viewer, they decide they would prefer to have their old familiar Adobe Reader instead and they go off looking for it. Windows 8.1 comes with Internet Explorer browser by default, which is also setup to use Microsoft’s Bing search engine by default. When you make a search using bing for the term “adobe reader” you are presented with results similar to the following.   The above results highlighted in yellow are all Bing advertisements and just about every one one of those links will result in contracting adware, spyware and worse. The official Adobe Acrobat reader site (adobe.com) is the first organic result but many, many people will click on results 1 to 3 which are all paid advertising. Why Microsoft allows such blatantly fraud companies to advertise on Bing is beyond comprehension. Now try the same search on Google Chrome …… (see results below) No scam advertising and the first result is clearly the genuine site. Google are obviously more vigilant and security conscious than Microsoft. Their strict adwords adverting policy does not allow such scam companies to advertise. Chrome is trying very hard to protect consumers from such scam companies and is making it more difficult to accidentally download harmful software. Google Chrome recently added a new warning to Chrome that pops up before users visit a site that will encourage downloads of unwanted software. A red warning lets readers know that the site they’re about to visit “might attempt to trick you into installing programs that harm your browsing experience” by, for example, switching your homepage or injecting extra ads on your screen. Chrome already has a warning that pops up once a software download is initiated.
