My PC passed the speed test but is still slow?

Sometimes your computer can remain slow even after having passed a speed test. We explain the possible reasons and how to fix them. When you run a speed test as described here http://dev.itguyswa.com.au/how-to-test-your-internet-speed/ and you get a fair result compared to the averages for your area or the technology you are using then you need to take a closer look at the computers and devices you are using. A suspected slow computer usually has up to four causes. 1) Slow Internet Speed 2) Computer Viruses 3) Corrupt Operating System 4) Computer hardware failure Let us examine items 2,3 and 4 in more detail Firstly isolate your reasoning for thinking your computer is slow and try to quantify the level of “slowness” ie. does your PC takes 4 minutes to startup?, When playing games is there is a lot of juddering and freezing?. Do files take 2 minutes to save etc. 1) Slow Internet Speed Self Test Internet Performance Guide Guide 1 – How to test your internet speed Guide 2 – How to compare your internet speed with your area average 2) Computer Viruses Even with a current Anti-Virus program, you can still pickup computer viruses and malware. The nastier ones get underneath the Anti-Virus program and can then only be removed using a rescue disk. In this article we show 21 tell-tail signs that your computer has a virus. This article shows how to remove 99% of known viruses using a rescue disk. If you complete the above and either no viruses are found or your speed does not improve, try the next step. Need expert help in fixing Internet & Wi-Fi Issues and live in Perth, Western Australia then call The IT Guys (WA) on 08 6365 5603 3) Corrupt Operating System Try backing up your data and then reinstalling the operating system. Although a long winded and time consuming process, this should increase the speed of your computer. However, if it does not, we need to look closely at the computer hardware. Need expert help in fixing Internet & Wi-Fi Issues and live in Perth, Western Australia then call The IT Guys (WA) on 08 6365 5603 4) Computer hardware failure The three main areas of hardware failure that cause a computer to slow down are a) RAM (Random Access Memory) b) HDD (Hard Disk Drive) c) Video Graphics Card. RAM (Random Access Memory) failures Most computers have two or more RAM sticks. say 2 x 4 MB or 2 x 8 MB or in older machines 2 x 1 MB. If both sticks fail, the computer will not start and you will probably hear a number of beeps on startup. However a common problem is that just one of the sticks dies and your RAM is then halved. There is no warning from the Action center or the BIOS but by checking Control Panel > System you can check the amount of RAM your computer recognizes. A computer running Windows 7 should have 4 MB minimum RAM but some Windows 8 laptops were only shipped with a meagre 2MB of RAM and grind to a halt when more than one application is open. RAM allows your computer or laptop to multi-task, so you can have more than one program open at a time. The higher the RAM the quicker you can multi-task or have multiple windows open. Need expert help in fixing Internet & Wi-Fi Issues and live in Perth, Western Australia then call The IT Guys (WA) on 08 6365 5603 HDD (Hard Disk Drive) failures Hard Disk Drives store your programs and data and are subject to sudden and catastrophic failures after 5 years or more. However, then do not always die suddenly. Quite often HDD‘s lose more and more of their storage capabilities over time. If a portion of the HDD drive dies, it can adversely affect the speed that the data is accessed and this can have significant performance implications. If the HDD sounds noisy or “clicks” try running a test from your BIOS. Also look at Control Panel > Adminstrative Tools > Defragment and Optimise Drives. Here you can Analyse and Defrag your drives. Make sure you have a full backup to an External Disk Drive before you attempt to do this. Need expert help in fixing Internet & Wi-Fi Issues and live in Perth, Western Australia then call The IT Guys (WA) on 08 6365 5603 Video Graphics Card failures If the perceived “slowness” relates to video or graphic problems then the first thing to check is the video-card. A video card can be “on-board” ie integrated with the motherboard or as the picture left, an additional board containing its own processor and RAM. If your trying to play games on a laptop, it will be using the laptops own RAM (see a) above) but most game-desktops will have a separate video card. Video card’s are difficult to diagnose, try the manufacturers website for tools and utilities for doing this or simple swap it out with a new or spare board and see if that fixes your problems.   Related Issues Self Test Internet Performance Guide Guide 1 – How to test your internet speed Guide 2 – How to compare your internet speed with your area average Guide 3 – What Alternative internet services are available at my address? 5 iPhone failed passcodes could mean losing all data

Having work emails on your iPhone could result in all data being erased after only 5 failed passcode attempts There is a feature on your iPhone that allows the data on your phone to be automatically erased if the passcode is entered incorrectly after 10 or less attempts. While this is a very good feature to ensure that a thief cannot get at your personal data if your phone is stolen, having the phone fall into the hands of a toddler can also have the same effect resulting in a complete loss of data after the phone is automatically “wiped“. Having your data erased or wiped is not a big thing as long as your regularly backup your data (allowing a complete restore or re-install of your phone from the backup) but without that backup you could lose everything. Even the best data recovery and CSI police departments do not have a solution to recovering data from a wiped-iPhone.   How to check if the iPhone “Erase Data” feature is switched on If the “Erase Data” button is switched on (green) then make sure you know your passcode and that you keep the phone well away from toddlers and infants. How could I lose my data after only 5 failed attempts and not 10? If you access your company emails on your iphone, the company has the ability to change the number of failed passcode attempts and has the option of either disabling the phone or erasing all the data on it. We recently had an employee of Woodside Petroleum (Perth, Australia) bring his phone in to us who’s grandchild had managed to get at his phone and repeatedly press the passcode screen. Unbeknownst to the employee, Woodside had changed the settings to erase all data after only 5 failed passcode attempts instead of the usual 10. We tried to recover the data but the phone had been completely wiped.   More Help from Apple iOS passcodes Forgot passcode for your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, or your device is disabled Deploying iPhone and iPad Security Overview :jk:

Data Recovery Perth – PC/Mac, HDD, USB, Email

Data Recovery Perth – PC/Mac, HDD, USB, Email We can recover most “deleted” or “inaccessible” data using our data recovery resources and we can make sure it never happens again Computer Software (Microsoft Office etc) Operating Systems (OS) and Computer Hardware (PCs, Laptops, Macs, Printers, monitors etc) are easily replaced. Data is NOT. We have all become far too reliant on storing our favorite music, photos, address books, emails, appointments, bank statements, accounts etc on electronic devices such as PC’s Laptops, USB Flash Drives, External Hard Disk Drives (HDD) iPads and iPhones without ensuring we have an up-to-date copy or “backup” that we can turn to should something happen to those electronic devices. If you accidentally delete something from your PC. Computer, Mac, USB or Mobile Device, the chances are that it has simply become inaccessible rather than lost and we will be able to help and recover the data using our Data Recovery tools and techniques. If you lose a file, stop using the computer immediately and bring it into us. Continuing to use the computer puts recovering the deleted file in jeopardy. If you have had a Computer Hardware failure and your PC or Mac or HDD has failed (“crashed“) the problem maybe more severe but it may still be recoverable. Often the Hard Disk Drive (HDD) will give early signs of failure before dying completely. The earlier you act once these sign occur, the higher the chance of NOT losing any data and it not costing too much to fix. If you wait until there is a complete disk failure or you keep using your computer, then chances of recovery are much slimmer and the cost to attempt so will be much higher. 6 Tell-Tale-signs your Hard Disk Drive (HDD) is failing and needs replacing ASAP   Slowing Down Computer, Frequent Freezes, Blue Screen Of Death These are very unspecific signs that can be caused by a million different things. However, regardless of what the issue behind these symptoms is, it is recommended that you immediately make a backup and get your Computer, PC or laptop checked by The IT Guys (WA) or another suitable professional.   Your PC, Computer, Mac or HDD starts to make strange grinding, clicking  and thrashing noises? That could mean your drive is beyond repair. If you’re hearing strange noises then act very quickly—you probably don’t have much time.   Corrupted Data You start to find files that fail to open and are corrupted even though they saved without errors or if files suddenly disappear.   Accumulation Of Bad Sectors Bad sectors are areas of the hard drive that do not maintain data integrity. They are automatically masked by the operating system and thus hard to identify, especially if large amounts of the disk are currently in use. If you actually run into bad sectors, however, that certainly is a bad sign   If your PC, Computer or HDD is older than 6 years… it is on its way out …read more Hard Disk Drives older than 6 years old have a 50% chance of imminent failure. Do you really want to risk it? Mac Tell-Tale Signs of Disk Failure On a Mac, if you see the following images on startup and they do not go away or complete, or you regularly see the “spinning wheel of death“       Cost of Data Recovery It is impossible for us to give an accurate estimate as to the likelihood or cost of recovering lost or corrupt data without first examining the device, computer, hard drive or USB stick. For that you will need to bring us the device and leave it with us for 24 to 48 hrs for us to test and assess the device. You also need to pay a non-refundable :assess-fee: fee when you leave it with us. If we cannot recover any data or it is a simple fix that will take us no more than 30 minutes, there is nothing more to pay. If we need to spend extra time to recover the data or replace a part, then we will call and ask your permission before continuing. Our location and opening hours can be found here. No appointments necessary. :jk:
