How to speed up your Apple Mac by 400%

A simple upgrade to your Apple iMac or MacBook can increase it’s performance by 400% and make it run like a new model. We show you how. When you buy or test a new Mac the first thing you notice is how quickly it starts up and the absence of the “spinning-wheel“. The reason newer Macs start so quickly is because they have a Solid State Hard Disk Drive (SSD) combined with a HDD drive known as a fusion-drive, rather than the conventional Hard Disk Drive (HDD) that was standard on iMacs prior to late 2012 and MacBooks prior to mid 2012. You may remember a few weeks ago you put a 1TB ssd and more ram into my 2010 27″ iMac. This email is just to let you know that I am really happy with the results. The iMac is now faster than my late 2013 laptop, which was top of the line with an SSD when I bought it. Definitely happy I upgraded and didn’t buy a new iMac. Murray October 2016 The following is a video of a 2011 iMac loading El Capitan OSx. It takes 44 seconds. It’s like watching paint dry? The same model iMac with a 1 TB Samsung SSD, takes only 17 seconds, just like a new iMac. If your Mac computer was purchased prior to 2012, then your probably noticing how slow it has recently become, on startup and in general use. how often are you seeing the apple “spinning wheel” (see above) as you open applications? Unfortunately, the size of each new Mac OS update gets larger and larger and the more work your hard disk (HDD) has to do to load the programs. If your computer is a pre-2012 model then it is most likely to have a conventional HDD, which is now > 4 years old and has a 50% chance of failing as well as slowing down due to age and an accumulation of old programs, utilities and old operating systems. The conventional wisdom to speed up a computer is to increase the RAM but that only works if you have 2GB of RAM or less or your gaming or running video editing or high intense graphic programs. True speed and performance is gained by replacing the old HDD with a SSD (solid state drive) which is what Apple started to do on it’s post 2012 models. SSD’s have no working parts and are in essence a very large USB thumb or flash drive and they work 4 times faster than conventional drives. Adding extra RAM also increase the speed of certain memory hungry programs that do a lot of processing such as video and image editing and rendering programs including Auto CAD, iMovie and Final Cut Pro but generally will not be noticeable if you already have 4GB or 8GB of RAM. Apple iOS 10 now available, but be careful how you install it

Apple’s latest and greatest iOS (operating system) has just become available (13 Sept 2016). Should I update to it? Apple’s latest iOS update has just come available as on 13th September 2016, featuring a huge amount of new features and fixes. However, unlike previous updates, this one is particularly large and even Apple do not advise making the charge before backing up your iPhone or iPad first. Now the problem Apple do not realise is that many, many iPhone/iPad users have NEVER backed-up their device, have no idea how to do so and have NEVER synced or even connected it to iTunes on an iMac or MacBook or even a Windows PC/Laptop using the supplied USB lead, If the update goes wrong…. you are in danger of wiping all the data from your iPhone or iPad. Updating via Apple iTunes is strongly recommended. Before attempting the upgrade Apple strongly advise you to BACKUP your data using iTunes rather than attempting the upgrade directly through your device. What is iOS 10? Apple devices don’t get viruses? :-) ;-) lol lmao

The good news: iPhones and iPads are largely immune to computer viruses and DO NOT need anti-virus software. The bad news: Apple computers such as iMac, Macbook, Macbook Pro, Macbook Air and Mac Mini ARE NOT IMMUNE to Computer Viruses and a top quality and FREE anti-virus program such as AVG For Mac is a necessity. Why you need to install Anti-Virus on your Mac Computer ASAP!! Back in June 2015 we warned all our Apple owners to beware of viruses on their Apple computers. in our post Apple Computers do not get Malware and Computer Viruses (Urban Myth) we now see at least one Apple computer per day (iMac, Macbook, Mac Mini) with computer viruses and malware either slowing down the computer or stopping it from starting or operating properly. Our posts shows you how to protect yourself from such viruses and what to do if you suspect you have one. Most viruses are designed to target Microsoft Windows computers, but there is one type of particular type of viruses called the CRYPTOLOCKER virus that targets both Windows and Apple computers and is NOT fixable without paying a ransom. In July we warned, OPENING AN EMAIL FROM AUSTRALIA POST HAS HAD 3 CLIENTS IN 3 DAYS LOSE ALL THEIR DATA TO THE CRYPTOLOCKER VIRUS. In August we posted, CRYPTOLOCKER Virus still a threat and very active. Please beware and we have heard of incidents almost daily (including one last Friday). The IT Guys were recently called out to a firm of lawyers who had all computers, servers and backup drives encrypted by the cryptolocker virus. As well as having to pay the ransom of $800, they had IT costs of $1,000 and had to close the office for a day. Apple Computers are NOT immune to Computer Viruses, please beware and take precautions as mentioned in our various posts. Mac or PC, Apple or Microsoft, we swing both ways

Mac or PC, Apple or Microsoft, we swing both ways Whether your problem is with an Apple Mac or a PC or laptop running Microsoft Windows or even a Linux server, the IT Guys have the experience in configuring, troubleshooting and repairing individual devices or hybrid networks. The IT guys can advise, consult and even purchase Apple or Windows devices and computers and help you set them up for home or office use (or both) but if you would rather do this yourself, here is a guide on what you need to consider before making any further purchases. What is best? Apple or Microsoft? How do I choose? The million dollar question 🙂 When you buy Apple you are purchasing the hardware (Macbook, iMac, iPhone, iPad) plus the operating system (iOS) which are designed to work perfectly together. Up until the introduction of the Microsoft Surface, Microsoft was a software designer and Operating System provider (Windows XP, Vista, 7,8,10, Office, Server) designed to work on all major hardware (IBM, HP, Dell, Toshiba, Acer, Asus etc), they even design and sell software for Apple devices (Office for Mac) but with the supply of their own hardware, Microsoft are moving ever closer to the Apple concept. As to which product is better or represents the best value for money, the answer is complete conjecture. Apple products may appear to be more expensive on initial purchase but as Apple supply and update their operating systems for FREE over a 10 year period there would be little difference in price if you had to upgrade your Windows OS, once or twice. However, with the launch of the New Apple iPhone 6S at over a thousand dollars, commentators are speculating that Apple are deliberately putting prices up to make their products more “elitist” to cater for the burgeoning Chinese Middle Class market. Not only are Apple products well made but no they have also become a status-symbol. How do I choose between Apple and Microsoft The simplest advice is to stick with what you know. If you have always used Microsoft products on a PC, then stick with Windows and Android devices. Unless you are prepared for a certain amount of self-training and angst we would advise against Windows user moving to Apple or Apple users moving to Windows devices. Q1. What kind of Smartphone do you have? As we become more and more mobile-centric, the choice of our smartphones or hand-held devices becomes  a decisive factor when choosing a brand or operating system of our laptop or desktop devices. Having an Android smartphone restricts you to using other devices using either Android, Chrome or Windows. iPhones and iPads will happily work with Apple iOS devices or Windows computers.     Q2.  Do you have other devices and computers you wish to share data with or information between It’s rare these days that we only own one computing device. It is not uncommon that we have a laptop or PC plus a smartphone and/or tablet device such as an iPad. Once you start using more than one device and wish to share an address book, music or files between devices and possible in the cloud, life becomes more complicated and choices have to be made.   iTunes does not work natively with Android Devices Although Apple iTunes is available for iOS and Windows platforms, you cannot easily play your itunes music on an Android phone or device. Apple have said this will be available in the future but as of September 2015 it is only available via exporting/importing and/or a number of Android apps.     Sharepoint & Onedrive If you are a user of Microsoft’s cloud sharing products SharePoint and Onedrive be wary of using them on Apple devices as doing so is not straightforward and does not work in the same way as on Microsoft platform’s. Outlook for Mac 2011 supported Sharepoint as a drive such as in iCloud, Google Drive or Dropbox but this was removed in Office for Mac 2016 much to our dismay.   Microsoft Outlook & Apple Calendaring Although these work well together on a Windows PC, they don’t work so well together on an Apple especially if you use iOS/iCloud calender apps which are iCal compliant. Adding Calendar entries on Outlook for the Mac using an Apple device does not sync with iCloud!! However, if you use Outlook on a Windows PC, syncing to iCloud is seamless and works very well. Another example of Apple and Microsoft’s petty rivalries.   Printing from Tablet’s and Smartphones Printing from iPhone or iPad In the early days the only printers an iPad or iPhone could print to were those labeled as AirPrint, your old faithful printer may not be able to be printed directly to from one of these devices. AirPrint is an Apple technology that helps you create full-quality printed output without the need to download or install drivers. To use an AirPrint printer with your Wi-Fi network, make sure your printer is connected to the same network as your iOS device or Mac. Then select the AirPrint printer from your favorite app and you’re ready to print. Apple authorised AirPrint Printers Many printer manufacturers are also bring out their own Apps (these can be found on the Apple App store) Printing from Android smartphones. To print from an Android smartphone is slightly different by installing and launching  on your Android phone or tablet after downloading it from the Android App store. It uses Google Cloud Print which works with most printers. But, for the best experience, a Cloud Ready printer is recommended. These types of printers can directly connect to the Internet and don’t need a computer for it to work. Google keeps a growing list of Cloud Ready printers here.   Cost of Repair, Maintenance & Resale Value,  Apple v Windows Where Apple and Windows/Android Computers and devices really shows their differences is the cost of maintenance and repair of their respective products. Apple Computers, devices and phones tend to hold their resale value […]

Your Apple Mac has a Virus (this is NOT a joke)

Apple Computers do not get Malware and Computer Viruses (Urban Myth) Apple iMac’s, PowerBooks and devices running iOS are just as prone to Malware and Computer Virus infection as are Windows computers At the IT Guys, we are seeing an increasing amount of Apple Macs coming through the door with problems not that dissimilar to that of their Windows counterparts. We scan EVERY device for viruses irrespective of it’s OS (Operating system) and in 90% of cases the Apple iMac, Macbook, Macbook Pro and Macbook Air, have been found to contain known malware such as Spyware and Trojan’s. Just because a Mac has a virus does not mean that it is going to be slowed down, spamming your friends with emails or producing porn popup windows. The viruses may well be dormant as they as mostly designed to take advantage of the security flaws in the Microsoft Windows Operating systems. Having said that, with the ever increasing market share of Apple OS, the criminals that design the malware are increasingly targeting and infect Mac iOS or Mac OS Do you need to install an Anti Virus product for a Mac? The bad news is “Yes” but make sure you use one that is specific for Mac iOS or Mac OS Installing a windows version of Norton’s on a Mac will corrupt the operating system. The Good News is there is an excellent FREE one in AVG Anti-Virus for Mac click on the link to install it. It’s NOT a FREE-Trial, it’s a genuine FREE Anti Virus from our friends at AVG. How to minimise the chances of a Mac getting a virus? Apple bring out security updates for Mac OS all the time. Make sure you install the latest patches and security updates as soon as they become available. To learn how to tell if your Mac needs updating, see the following article. See Update OS X and App Store apps on your Mac Is your Apple Mac, iMac or MacBook running slow? How to speed up your Mac How to check Mac, iMac, Mini or MacBook for MacOS Updates   Beware of the following Fake Programs claiming to be legitimate Anti Virus Programs Do not install MacKeeper or iAnti-Virus or CleanMyMac: See this User Tip: https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3022 Do not be tricked by ‘SCAREWARE’ Do not be tricked by ‘scareware‘, such as pop-ups on your browser, that tempts computer users to download fake anti-virus software that may itself be malware. Once installed, the software may steal data or force people to make a payment to register the fake product. Examples include MacKeeper and iAntivirus, but there are others. Also, beware of MacSweeper and MACDefender** (also goes under the name of MacProtector, MacGuard, MacSecurity or MacShield): These are malware that mislead users by exaggerating reports about spyware, adware or viruses on their computer in an attempt to obtain payment for an application that does nothing that free utilities do not also offer, and in many cases will also mess up your system. *Malicious software dubbed MACDefender takes aim at users of the Mac OS X operating system by automatically downloading a file through JavaScript. But users must also agree to install the software, leaving the potential threat limited. **(This malware is not to be confused with MacDefender, the maker of geocaching software including GCStatistic and DTmatrix. The company noted on its site it is not affiliated with the malware.) Beware of fake ADOBE sites Mac users should always obtain their copy of Adobe Flash Player directly from Adobe’s official website and to disable the “Open ‘safe’ files after downloading” option in Safari Preferences/General to avoid automatically running files downloaded from the Internet. Also, do not turn on Java in Safari Preferences/Security. Few websites use Java. Javascript is something entirely different and should be left active. Avoid going to suspect and untrusted Web sites Torrent, Gaming, FREE Software and Porn sites should especially be avoided. Check out what you are downloading. Mac OS X asks you for you administrator password to install applications for a reason! Only download media and applications from well-known and trusted Web sites, i.e. the developers’ own web sites or the Apple App Store. If you think you may have downloaded suspicious files, read the installer packages and make sure they are legit. If you cannot determine if the program you downloaded is infected, do a quick Internet search and see if any other users reported issues after installing a particular program. Avoid Peer-to-peer sharing applications. Download torrents (such as the now defunct LimeWire and PirateBay) supplying pirated software, movies etc are hotbeds of potential software issues waiting to happen to your Mac. macOS Monterey (10.16)

macOS 10.16 Monterey launched on October 25, 2021. Should I install yet? The general rule is to give a new release at least a month before using. This gives Apple some time to fix any possible bugs. More importantly, why do you need to upgrade (unless you are running Mojave or earlier) Be careful, make a full time-machine backup and make sure your computer is compatible, has enough free disk space and is NOT running a conventional HDD (Hard-disk-drive) …as an update such as this will likely kill the HDD. Where to find information about the model, macOS and technical specification of a Mac Check compatibility macOS Monterey is compatible with the following computers. If your Mac isn’t compatible, you may be able to install an old version of macOS instead. MacBook introduced in 2016 or later MacBook Air introduced in 2015 or later MacBook Pro introduced in 2015 or later Mac mini introduced in 2014 or later iMac introduced in late 2015 or later iMac Pro introduced in 2017 or later Mac Pro introduced in 2013 or later View the complete list of compatible computers. If you’re upgrading from macOS Sierra or later, your Mac will need 26GB of available storage to upgrade. If you’re upgrading from an earlier release, your Mac will need up to 44GB of available storage. Download macOS Monterey If you’re using macOS Mojave or later, you can get macOS Monterey via Software Update: Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Software Update. Or use this link to open the macOS Monterey page on the App Store: Get macOS Monterey. Then click the Get button or iCloud download icon. If you DO NOT want to upgrade to Monterey but only wish to update the current macOS …click on “More Info” instead of “Upgrade Now” :jk:
