Getting a new phone? Read this first

Getting a New Phone? Google/Microsoft Authenticator? Read this first. Before you setup your shiny new smartphone and give away/scrap the old one, there is something you need to consider. Two things in fact. 2FA, 2-Factor-Authentication especially if you use Google Authenticator or Microsoft Authenticator (who call it MFA or Multi-Factor-Authentication) to securely login to your accounts. Google Authenticator and Microsoft Authenticator apps do not automatically transfer the sites that you use to securely login to banking, mail and other secure sites. There is a procedure to go through and it is not that straight forward and they all involve backing up and recovering the information BEFORE turning off your old phone. How to setup OneDrive and SharePoint on an iMac or Macbook

We show you how to install Microsoft’s OneDrive and Sharepoint on a Mac, so you can share files with other Mac and Windows users If you or your company uses Microsoft OneDrive or Microsoft SharePoint for cloud data storage in a Windows PC environment as part of Office 365, it can also be setup to work the same way and access and edit files on a Mac OS device such as an iMac, Mac Mini or Macbook as follows. SharePoint (OneDrive) stops syncing on older Macs from 10 Sept 21 There is no such thing as a “SharePoint-App“. SharePoint is basically the Business version of OneDrive but your computer (Windows or Mac) uses the “OneDrive-App” as the program that syncs files between your computer and the Microsoft Cloud. To setup SharePoint initially, you need at lease one licence of Microsoft Office 365 (Business, Business Essentials, Business Premium, Enterprise E1, E3, E5, SharePoint Plan 1 and 2) However, to access SharePoint files you only need the “OneDrive App” (available to all Office 365 Personal, Office 365 Home or higher. Office 2011 does not have the OneDrive App and was not built to use OneDrive or SharePoint (even though you may have limited success using) Your mac should also be using Mac OS X 10.12 (Sierra) or later. So if not already installed, start by downloading and installing the “OneDrive App” Firstly open the Onedrive App on the Mac (if already installed) or install it by either of the following methods: Download the app from the Microsoft Site https://products.office.com/en-us/onedrive/download or from the Apple App Store by clicking on the App Store icon   and searching for “Onedrive”   A comprehensive guide is also available from Microsoft at the following address https://support.office.com/en-us/article/sync-files-with-the-onedrive-sync-client-on-mac-os-x-d11b9f29-00bb-4172-be39-997da46f913f Once Onedrive is installed, you can then login to your companies Sharepoint or your personal Onedrive account and “sync” your files to your Mac using the OneDrive App How to Sync SharePoint Files to a Mac Login to your Microsoft Account using a web browser, there are a number of ways such as: https://account.microsoft.com/account https://login.microsoftonline.com/ or directly to the company Sharepoint site such as https://your-sharepoint-name.sharepoint.com And open OneDrive or SharePoint in your web browser choose OneDrive or Sharepoint using a browser and depending on which files you wish to sync Syncing OneDrive Files Syncing SharePoint Files Once in OneDrive or Sharepoint click on the “sync” icon This should force the “OneDrive” app to open on your Mac (SharePoint uses the OneDrive App) Select the files or folders you wish to sync. On the top taskbar of your Mac, you should see the Onedrive icon start to become animated as the the files start to sync, depending on the number of files, these may take some time to download   To access the files that have been synced, right click the “Onedrive” icon, and select the Onedrive or Sharepoint folder you wish to access Other available options here can be found under “Preferences” You can choose to have a “local” copy of OneDrive or Sharepoint files on your computer or choose to leave them in the-cloud and open them “on-demand” if you are running the latest Mac OS (Mac OS 10.14 or newer). This feature is not available on older Mac OS versions. You are not restricted to only having data from OneDrive or SharePoint. You can have both and/or multiple accounts for different users (see below) to add a new account click on the “Add an Account” button The “Office” tab, allows All Office Applications to sync files and you can choose to automatically “merge” conflicts or keep copies of both files and manually work out the changes. Be careful choosing “Always keep both copies” in a situation where there are multiple team members modifying files simultaneously, as you could find yourself with multiple copies of every file. A recent development on Mac OS, is that if you also run Windows on your Mac using Parallels with OneDrive running, hitting the “Sync” button will force the Sharepoint sync to the Windows version and not the Mac version. What should I use OneDrive or SharePoint. What is the difference? Should I save files to SharePoint or OneDrive? Beware of “Sync-Problems” It is not guaranteed that all files will immediately sync, especially if you are “uploading” files to SharePoint or OneDrive from your local drive You may see a warning such as this Clicking on the “X” opens another window that highlights the problems with the syncing. Clicking on the magnifier symbol takes you to the file or folder and allows you to correct them. Common OneDrive/SharePoint Sync problems include: “Names or Folders containing characters that are not allowed” such as: Blank leading Characters Blank Trailing Characters Click here for a full list SharePoint/OneDrive Sync Issues A Dummy’s Guide – Using Microsoft Sharepoint OneDrive/Sharepoint Data Limits – Personal Users Each personal users of Office 365 has up to 1TB of OneDrive storage included in their subscriptions. OneDrive/Sharepoint Data Limits – Business Users For Office 365 Business versions, each Office 365 individual user licence offers 1TB storage per person, combining licences over an organization (tenant) gives an overall storage allowance calculated as follow: 1 TB plus 10 GB per user license purchased. Example scenarios of increased storage allocation 100 user licenses = Total tenant allocation of 2TB For “unlimited” cloud-data-storage plans, upgrade Office Business 365 to OneDrive Plan 2, Enterprise E1 or Enterprise E3 licences. Where did the Outlook search go?

Search in Outlook has (or is about to) moved. And there is no way of resetting it back!! Like all Outlook 2019 and Office 365 users, I am sure you are used (and happy) to have the Outlook Search option positioned at the top of the list of email titles (like below) Enjoy this while you can as we are reliably informed, Microsoft have been changing the position to the blue tool-bar on various upgrades since November 2019. From Microsoft…. “Last year, we introduced a new “Coming Soon” feature that offered customers a way to preview significant, new updates planned for Outlook for Windows.  With Coming Soon, customers could try the updates when it’s convenient and provide feedback before the updates become the new default experience in production – at which time Coming Soon would disappear. The first update we introduced with Coming Soon was the user experience design updates.  We’re starting to roll out Coming Soon again so you can preview the updates to Search being announced today” Full article here: https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/outlook-blog/search-in-outlook-puts-your-results-on-top/ba-p/930232 Outlook fans are NOT happy!! https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/msoffice/forum/all/new-outlook-search-at-the-title-bar-anyone-else/04bf8cad-145a-4be2-9864-d7f8fdb739a7 and the reaction from Microsoft …. not very sympathetic Hello, We’re sorry to hear you’re not enjoying the new search functionality. In Outlook, please go to Help>Feedback to send feedback to our engineering teams about this or anything else you don’t like or even like. Thanks Microsoft Support We don’t like it either, maybe Microsoft will rollback the new feature in future updates, or stop it happening at all. If you want to have your say …… in Outlook click on File> Feedback > I Don’t Like Something ….and have your say. :jk:

Beat the boredom. How to watch BBC, ITV, Netflix USA in Australia during lockdown

Run out of things to watch on Australian Netflix, Prime, Foxtel, ABC, SBS, 7,9 & 10? Even before my coronavirus-self-isolation it was increasingly difficult to find new programs to watch in Australia (especially if your looking for something humorous and light-hearted) Yet the content does exist…. if you live in the UK or Ireland, even the US. There is an endless supply of TV content you can watch from the UK and the US, as long as you can get past the geo-restrictions. “What are geo-restictions?” – Due to international copyright laws, some TV content is only allowed to be viewed in certain countries. It is “geo-restricted“. If it is detected that you are trying to view content from a country outside of a geo-restriction … ie an Australian user trying to view British Programs, your attempts will be blocked. This is done because each computer has an invisible “IP Address” which gives out the country and sometimes the city that you or your ISP (Internet-Service-Provider ie Telstra, iiNet, Optus etc.) are located, making it easy to geo-restrict access. A ludicrous law in this day of global-consumption but until the entertainment industries gets over itself, Australia will continue to be a backwater in terms of what-we-get-to-see and when-we-get-to-see-it because of geo-restrictions. You may have experienced such censorship yourself while trying to access SBS or ABC iView from your hotel in Bali, Hong Kong or Thailand with images such as these. Access to overseas TV content (or Australian content while overseas) is available by using a VPN (Virtual-Private-Network) A VPN, or virtual private network, is a secure tunnel between your device and the internet. VPNs are used to protect your online traffic from snooping, interference, and censorship. A typical use of a VPN is to provide secure internet access between company servers and home computers using Microsoft RDC (Remote Desktop Connection) VPN’s can also act as a proxy, allowing you to mask or change your location and surf the web anonymously from wherever you want. In this way it is used to fool the source of a website or content streamer into believing the source user is from another IP address, one already located close-by or at least in the same country. In this way, content that would normally be inaccessible to users outside of that country becomes available because the source website believes it is being accessed from within that country. Effective VPN clients are NOT Free but not that expensive either. There are a number of companies that advertise FREE VPN’s and some work for a limited time, but they are all trying to sell you their paid VPN service. Rather than struggle with Free VPN services and browser add-ins such a Hola, we recommend purchasing a tried-and-test VPN client VPN Guru lists it’s top 6 VPN clients as Express VPN, NordVPN, UltraVPN, SurfShark, Cyber Ghost, SafeVPN and Privacy Web Going with #1 choice, We tried and tested Express VPN One Express VPN licence allows you to install the client on up to 5 devices be that Windows, MacOS, iOS. We installed on an iPad and a Mac computer and both worked very well, with one or two caveats Downloading the ExpressVPN desktop app To get started, go to ExpressVPN.com and select the Get Started option at the top. A single ExpressVPN subscription comes with easy-to-use apps for every device you own. Mac, Windows, Android, iOS, Linux, routers etc Pick the plan you want, add your email, and enter payment details. Note that ExpressVPN offers a 30-day money back satisfaction guarantee. If applying via the Apple App store or Google Play, you may also get a 7 day free-trial. Click Join Now. Next, choose a password or accept the one generated for you. (Be sure your password includes a few extra characters, numbers, and plenty of characters in upper and lowercase.) You will then receive an activation code. Keep this in a secret place – meaning, not on a sticky note on your desktop. Installing ExpressVPN on desktop Installing ExpressVPN is easy on a desktop or laptop – although there are a few extra steps compared to the mobile client. For the desktop, download the client and install it. The good thing about a client like ExpressVPN is that it is remarkably easy to install and configure. You’ve actually already done the hardest steps – choosing your plan and adding payment details. With the client, sign-in using the account you just created. Enter your activation code. Decide if you want to launch a startup and if you want to send a crash report and other data to improve the product. Your next step is the most important one of all – selecting the location of the server. If you wish to access TV channels in the UK, choose a UK server, if US channels, choose a US server etc. Click the big power icon to connect. This will make your Internet connection secure. Once you connect with ExpressVPN, the app will run in the background and there’s nothing more to do to use the VPN, although you can configure features and change settings. You may notice a decrease in Internet speed while the VPN is switched on, so it maybe recommended to only have it switched on while requiring it. However, if you are using the VPN simply to make your connections secure, choose the home location closest to you. Downloading the ExpressVPN mobile app Like any good service, ExpressVPN is available both on Apple iOS and Android – in fact, it tops our list of the best Android VPN apps – and the client works like any other app. With the mobile app, you have the choice to start a seven-day trial. You can find it at the App Store or Play Store, or you can simply visit the ExpressVPN website to look for the mobile install. Once you find the app, verify that the logo matches what you see on the ExpressVPN site (a V logo with wings). This is important […]
