Windows 7 no longer available on new laptop purchases!!

Major manufacturers such as Dell, Toshiba and Lenovo aren no longer selling computers with the option of Windows 7 Pro.   It appears that the latest CPU chips produced by intel, will no longer support Windows 7 and most manufacturers (with the exception of HP) are no longer offering the downgrade option from Windows 10 Pro to Windows 7 Pro. If you already have Windows 7 on a computer or laptop, Microsoft support is extended until 2020, so no need to start panicking yet. Just remember, once your current hardware dies, you will have little choice but to embrace Windows 10. However, there are always exceptions to the rule. Look for old-stock on sites such as Ebay for computers being shipped with the Windows 7 option Buy a second-hand computer with Windows 7 installed Run Windows 7 in a “virtual-window” using a product such as VMWare in your Windows 10 environment Install Windows 7 on a Mac using “Bootcamp” or “Parallels“ Ditch Windows and buy a Mac Or just get used to the fact that Windows 7¬† already has one-foot-in-the-grave¬†and embrace Windows 10. It’s not that bad once you get used to it ūüôā Need more help? If you don’t backup your phone and computer data, you stand a high risk of losing everything.

Remember the old drink-driving advert that said “If you drink and drive your a bloody idiot”? Well the same can be said for people and their data. We get many people coming through our doors with sad stories about breaking their phone and losing recent holiday pics or having 10 years of baby-photos on an old computer that has just died. We’ve seen the tears and disappointment in their faces and in about 50% of all cases have not been able to recover their data. The sad thing is, these incidents are all totally avoidable if only they spent a few minutes BACKING UP THEIR DATA. Ideally in two places (locally and in the cloud). We’ve covered this topic many many times in our posts, so here are a few links to past posts and articles. Backing up Android or Google Phone (Samsung etc) Backing up Apple iPhone, iPad, iMac, Macbook Backing up Windows Computers Backing up Servers Backing up any device to the Cloud We always suggest backing up both “locally” and to “the cloud”, the following article explains the options and the pricing. How to avoid nuisance telephone calls and scammers

Do you have a Telstra “Land-Line” Telephone? or know an elderly friend or relative that does? We daily either hear of an elderly customer falling foul of a telephone scammer or we are asked to fix computers that have been “hacked” by someone calling on a land-line and claiming to be from “Telstra” or “Microsoft” There are two easy solution that are both free FREE. Rip the phone out of the wall and use a mobile phone for all calls. (it cost money to call a mobile phone so scammers are reluctant to do so)or “Telstra Home Messages 101“ Simply divert all calls to Home Messages 101, most scammers will not leave a message because they would then have to provide a return telephone number that you can report to the Police. You can then return genuine calls at your leisure and ignore the scammers. Need more help? Outlook E-mail Sending Issue Fix

Having problems sending email when using Outlook? Are others having problems emailing you from Outlook? If you or a colleague has recently updated their email server, moved to a new email provider, changed to Microsoft Hosted Exchange or a new email host, then Microsoft Outlook may experience problems in either sending emails or receiving emails from other people. This is because Outlook has a feature called “Auto-complete“. As you start typing a name, if that name has been used before it maybe automatically be suggested in a list (see above example). The AutoSuggest/Auto-Complete feature of Outlook keeps a cache of addresses you‚Äôve recently used. As well as the email address, the cache also keeps details of the last server sent to. If the server has changed, Outlook may not be able to send the email and may return an error. In some cases Outlook may simply send the email, no error is returned, the email does not bounce but the recipient does not receive that email as it has been sent to the old email server. If your are having issues emailing someone or other people are having problems emailing you, try deleting the email address from the Microsoft Outlook¬†Auto-complete as follows:   Outlook for Windows 2010, 2013, 2016, 2019 In Outlook 2010 and Outlook 2013/16/19, you can click on the X icon on the right side of the selected list item to delete it from the suggestion list (but not from the Suggested Contacts folder). Another method, in Outlook 2010, is to remove the contact item from the Suggested Contacts folder. To see all your Contact folders, switch to the Contacts Navigation (keyboard shortcut: CTRL+3). Another method: Select the unwanted name or e-mail address by using the UP ARROW or DOWN ARROW key. Press DELETE. Then shut Outlook, reopen it, create a new email and type in the email address. Outlook should no longer find the old address details in the Autocomplete cache. Outlook For Mac The Outlook for Mac version is slightly different to the Windows Version. The Auto-Complete still provides suggestions via a drop-down list Some entries that have errors can be removed by clicking on the “X” next to the name. For others, select the person. Hover over the name with the mouse cursor and a window appears, select the “Contact” icon Once the Contact window appears, click on the “Delete” symbol to remove the entry. Click the “OK” button to confirm. Close the window, create a new mail and type the email address as a new entry. Need more help? How are you preventing staff opening emails that could ruin your business?

Your Business Computers may be protected from Computer Viruses but it’s Phishing you really need to worry about.¬†Anti-Virus programs (AVG, Nortons etc) DO NOT protect your business from “Phishing”. But there is a solution. No matter how up-to-date your virus protection or operating system (OS) is, it is normally human-error that gives scammers the information they need to empty your bank accounts, encrypt your data files, disrupt your business and steal your personal information. Clicking on any links in emails such as the above, can fool staff members into giving their login and password details away or they can infect your browser or computer with malware that tracks the sites they visit and then captures the login and passwords used to access those site. This practice is known as “Phishing” Some email accounts offer better protection against malicious emails, spam, phishing and virus attachments than others. Unfortunately FREE and ISP email accounts such as Outlook.com/Hotmail, Gmail, Yahoo, iCloud, Bigpond, iiNet, Westnet etc. do not offer a great deal of protection from SPAM emails, phishing emails, emails containing viruses and Ransomware. Only¬†Microsoft Hosted Exchange is providing secure email accounts that provide a level of spam detection. Microsoft Hosted Exchange mailboxes start from only $6.05 per mailbox per month. Not a lot of money to give you peace of mind. In the past users have relied on 3rd party Anti-Virus programs to protect them from computer viruses which were being delivered as a malicious program/attachment to an email. And a whole industry of anti-virus software providers has blossomed. Unfortunately, todays threats are mostly from emails trying to send users to fake websites where there is an attempt to capture your login details, password, credit-card, banking details or identity information such as DOB, Passport number, Drivers licence number and postal address. This is known as Phishing   Avast/AVG, Trend, Symantec, Mcafee, Microsoft etc all offer program or services that attempt to remove malicious links and malware from incoming emails. Some are better than others and some are very complicated to setup and involve re-directing emails to servers that detect and remove malicious links and attachments before sending the cleaned mail back to the client. The best available protection again Phishing is from Microsoft and is called “Advanced Threat Protection” or “ATP” and is available to anyone using the following Microsoft Hosted Exchange or Microsoft¬†Office 365¬† Business or Enterprise subscription plans.
